ranking of web hosting services?
Anyone know of a metric that ranks web hosting services on things like uptime, access options (i.e. FTP vs. full shell account), etc.? I need something for a pretty simple website, but would prefer to have more access than less access.
Or alternately, can anyone recommend a good service? It seems like they're pretty cheap. $10/month gets to pretty close to unlimited transfers, unlimited number of domains, etc. Thanks! |
Dreamhost has always been good to me. They have the ocassional blip with a little downtime, but nothing that would prevent me from staying with them.
Lots of access, including shell. |
Thanks Scott. Looks like they're having a birthday special, too. Might be a good time to signup!

http://www.webhostingtalk.com will help you learn all you need to know about hosting companies.
If your site is "entertainment" related there is another board that has the initials "GFY". The domain can't be posted here, but the conversation is centered around hosting needs for "entertainment" sites. |

I use MediaTemple and have been very pleased. Their support is great, the uptime is fantastic, and the features are unbeatable. The setup they give you takes a little while to get used to, but it is well worth the money. ^
I also have a few domains with A Small Orange and have had a couple of issues with downtime, but other than that, they are a good company. |
I use FutureQuest, which has been rock solid and has great customer service 24/7. I have three domain names on the one account, which makes it a bargain.

just be cautious of the unlimited transfer and insane limits plans, it would be like buying a RTW trip for $10 and actually expecting it to be honored.

I've always used Yahoo small business.

I use Pair.com exclusively. They are a few bucks for than the lower end guys (dreamhost, 1and1), but their support and service is top notch. Depends on your needs.

I've used lightningservers.net for a long time, and had good results.

one "possible" option.. google.
Has anybody tried to use google sites or google apps for such application? I suppose no shell account, but you may have a lot of flexibility. |
Google Apps is great for e-mail. Their website component is of limited utility for a full-fledged website.
