It's about time they came up with a decent use for their Live Cloud initiative.
This actually looks somewhat useful. Too bad I don't have a WinMo device anymore. And it seems to only work via BlueTooth or USB cable, not directly via a data connection into the cloud. I guess they haven't really figured it out.

Your phone does not have to be Windows Mobile to work. It works with a variety of phone operating systems. This is a limited version of Mobile Me---kind of (if Mobile Me actually worked as advertised). Only syncs contacts and some other stuff with a Hotmail account. At least it's a free backup program. I would not really call it a sync option--at least not at this point. Live Mesh is the more likely sync option, but mobile sync on Live Mesh is not here (yet).

Since you can already sync your Windows Mobile device to your Hotmail or MSN account to sync your mail, contacts, and calendar, Phone Data Manager isn't really introducing anything new here. The only truly "new" functionality that I can detect here is the ability to backup pictures and videos from the device to your PC.
And as MikeM already mentioned, this is a backup tool, not a sync tool. I wouldn't consider Phone Data Manager as being part of the Live initiative; it's merely a backup tool.

It syncs with loads of other phones that previously could not sync with the Live services, that is new to me. Also, Activesync or WMDC can't natively sync to Live.com, can it? Phone Data Manager synced my Nokia phone effortlessly to Live.com, and did it more reliably than anything I've ever seen from WMDC (which IMHO is a piece of crap).

I concede that it doesn't require a WinMo phone; I misunderstood that in my initial read of the info.
But it is certainly a play into the Live Cloud initiative. And the fact that WinMo is only supported via USB while other devices can operate via Bluetooth is a bit ironic.
