Not going to happen. One of our contributors is working on integration to Tripit though, which would let you do this indirectly.

Would anyone be interested in OpenFlights automatically populating flight data just based upon flight date, flight number, and departure city? This would include destination airport, actual flight times, aircraft, and possibly aircraft registration number (e.g. N510UA).

Would anyone be willing to donate to OpenFlights at the Gold Level (see here) for this functionality, or would you rather pay for a block of queries (like the way ExpertFlyer charges for 250 queries)?

The underlying data is not free, as far as I can tell :(

Flightdiary does this for free. Maybe they've found a free data source?

Thanks for the info. As far as I can tell, there are no free, legal sources of this data. It looks like they're either owned by the same company (or are affiliated with) flightradar24.com, so I'm guessing they're already paying for the data via that channel.

Sadly, I don't think OpenFlights is blessed enough to already have access to that data without paying for it :(

If this is ever going to happen, we'll probably have use FlightAware's API, but that costs 0.2 cents a hit. That would (theoretically) allow a Gold user to do up to 10,000 queries per year.

Still, OpenFlights' philosophy to date has been that we support free, open standards, and that everybody gets the same features and you donate if you want to, not because you "need" to to get more. Introducing something like this goes against that. Am I on the wrong track?

I like your philosophy in theory, but in reality, I'd rather pay for the Gold level status and be able to save time when entering data than continue to wait while you look for a nonexistent source of the data for free or stand on some ideological principles. Just sayin'.

What about using flightstats? KVS scrapes it I believe. I don't think you get the registration number, but everything else is on there.

I don't personally like KVS's business model, and I would encourage OpenFlights not to go down that path. I'm happy to pay a reasonable amount for legitimate access, but I don't want to "donate" for to something that borders on illegitimate.

FlightStats' terms of use forbids screen-scraping. FlightStats has an API, but it's about half a cent per query and has minimum monthly fees.

Imports from TripIt

OpenFlights.org now supports importing flight data from TripIt -- no more punching in data manually!

More details here: http://openflights.org/blog/2012/03/...s-from-tripit/

Prototype Android App for loggin flights

Hello to all,

Two friends and I have been (slowly) developing an Android application for keeping a log of flights. It is now reaching a beta stage and we are looking for beta testers.
Beta testers would need to have an Android phone running Android 2.2 or later and that have an external sdcard (most phones) or other on device storage space (Nexus S, Amazon Kindle Fire).
They would have to install the application from an email and not from the Google Play market. Once the beta test is over, we will put the app on the Google Play market and probably the Amazon market as well.

I would like to get a virtual show of hands of people who would be interested in participating in this beta test. If you are interested, maybe you can put a short message in this thread. Or if the moderators think a separate thread for that would be better, I would be happy to have one started.

What the app can do:
  1. Keep a log of flights, similar to openflights.org.
  2. Allow very quick entry/search of airports.
  3. Synchronize with your openflights.org account.
  4. View flights on an interactive map. This map can be zoomed in and out and moved around the screen.
  5. Filter flights to view.
  6. View shortest paths of flights, similar to what gcmap.com does
The application uses map sources that are publicly available (mapquest provided satellite maps and mapquest skinned OpenstreetMap.org maps).
The application can cache maps on the device so that you can still view maps when you are offline (for example when you are in flight).

Below are some screenshots.

Main menu:

Flight input screens.
On the left, quick city search.
In the middle input of flight number: If you have flown the same itinerary with the same airline before, you will be offered the existing flight numbers and the times will be filled as well.
On the right: a completed input screen.

Full un-zoomed map of flights. On left based on OpenStreetMap map, in the middle satellite map and on the right, flights filtered by date:

Nice. I'd be interested in trying this out. Will this be an open-source application?

I am running 4.0.4 on a Nexus S and a HP Touchpad. I am considering getting a Samsung GS3.

Sign me up for the beta.

Do I understand correctly that this app does not interface with OpenFlights at all?
