With a bit of luck, we'll be at half a million flights total recorded by the end of September.

Thanks for the work, and FAcebook is starting to piss me off with a lot of things lately, haha.

When OpenFlights came out, I started entering flights manually because I didn't succeed exporting the FM data, so I soon grew tired. Now I've tried again and it's been so easy, I wonder what failed last time around.

Anyway, now I'm checking all data, and I've noticed that some airlines are wrong. I didn't "keep historical airlines names" (my fault!), and after reading the FAQ, I've learnt that OF uses current airline data. But I'm afraid that it's not completeley up-to-date. Here's an example:

- Back in May 2010 I flew CMN-BCN with Jet4You, a Moroccan airline. OF says it's Komiinteravia instead. According to Wikipedia:

Jet4you adopted the IATA code 8J from the now defunct Russian airline Komiinteravia.
I listed the flight, clicked on "Search for airline", entered every detail (IATA, ICAO, Callsign) and tried adding it as new, but this message came up: "An airline using the name or alias Jet4You exists already", yet it's not in the list and it won't let me enter it. Is there anyway to do it?

- On the other hand, I managed to delete the flights I had previously entered manually, but I haven't succeeded with the trips, which remain there. How can this be done?

That's all for now, although I guess it'll take me some time to get used to it. But it really is a great tool, jpatokal, keep up the great work you're doing!! ^^

The problem is that IATA codes are not unique. There are small, regional carriers that have the same code as other small, regional carriers in a different region of the world.

Yup, this is a real pain in the rear, with no good solution. OpenFlights currently allows only one 'live' airline per IATA code, although there can be multiple non-active ones sharing it (which are ignored for everything except imports and manual airline lookups).

Anyway, I've de-actived Komiinteravia and added 8J to Jet4You. Jet4You was already in the database, it was just there without the IATA code, so it didn't show up unless you explicitly looked up non-IATA airlines. The usability of the whole search box could use quite a bit of work, and I need to add some mechanism for submitting suggested changes. :o

Just a heads-up: OpenFlights' maps have been pretty flaky lately, with both NASA and MetaCarta's servers going down simultaneously. We've now switched to a new pair hosted by OSGeo and OpenGeo respectively, so here's hoping things will be more stable. @:-)

This is weird. I created an account on openflights.org and entered a bunch of data. I then went to flightmemory to check out that site ... but oddly enough, I was able to login with my openflights.org credentials and was able to see a good chunk of the data (that I had previously entered on openflights).

What gives?

josmon10 Oct 3, 2010 5:42 am

In the end I decided to start from scratch, so I deleted every entry on OpenFlights and imported the data from Flight Memory again. It worked just fine.

A couple of things I've noticed:

- OF doesn't seem to accept diacritical marks (accents, umlauts, etc), at least those coming from FM. It's not a major issue, for there are just a few airlines that have them (Air Algérie, Aerolíneas Argentinas...), but the notes or comments I've written for every flight on FM are in Catalan, making it very hard to read on OF. This happens of course with many other languages.

- The grand totals of miles/km, airports, carriers, etc match up, but according to FM I've flown from/to 49 countries, and OF says it's 50. Could this be because of Hong Kong, that's considered by FM as part of China? Is there a way to see the list of countries on OF? I haven't been able to find it.

OpenFlights doesn't share its usernames or data with anybody, least of all our dear competitor :p , so the only possible explanation is that you've already created an account on FM with the same name/password, and are seeing data you yourself entered...

This is only for FM imports, right? You should be able to enter them manually.

The FM import issue, though, is a known bug: we (unfortunately) opted to use a crappy parsing library that does not support anything other than plain vanilla ASCII, and its maintainers appear to have abandoned the project. :td:

I'm afraid not, but here's what the database says for your flights. (I presume you're OK with publishing this, since your profile is public!)

On second thoughts, it looks like I created an acct with FM a while ago ... it is weird that I stopped entering data there at virtually the same data point as I did on OF

After how many visits do frequently used airport symbols become green or blue?

malgudi Oct 4, 2010 10:52 pm

Is there an option to enter the flight info without the dates?

It's scaled, not absolute. The airport you visit the most is always green, and any airports that get more than 1/4 of the top score (by flight count) are light blue.

No, dates are mandatory. You can always use a date like 1901-01-01 if you want to though.
