OT: ipod stuff
 

Was thinking it would be good to use an ipod on long flights. Although my mate said they only last for 4 hours. Can you plug an iphone charger somewhere in WT?


OT I know...

Very poor battery life when charged - you've hit on a key reason I've never bought an I-Pod.

Maybe get a Sony MP3 player if you still haven't bought one (up to 40 hours battery life, enough to see you through any flight)? Probably plenty of the others out there have good battery life but I know more about Sony as that's the one I've got.

I'd make sure you have the better noise-reducing headphones too as the plane-noise can be quite significant.

Unfortunately, the WT seats do not offer power ports for laptops.

Gleaned from Apple, here is a summary of max playback durations for the current line up of models:

iPod Touch (8/16GB models):
Music: approx 22 hours playtime
Video: approx 5 hours playtime

iPod Classic (80/160GB models):
Music: approx 30 hours playtime
Video: approx 5 hours playtime

iPod Nano (4/8GB models):
Music: approx 24 hours playtime
Video: approx 5 hours playtime

iPod Shuffle (1GB):
Music: approx 12 hours playtime

If you're just listening to music, you should be fine for most flights. Another thing to be aware of is you can charge off a USB cord, so can run off your laptop if you've got a spare battery.

Apple offer a charger cable for the in-seat power jack, but as Prospero states, you will need at least WT+.

Cost is around GBP25

You could do the usb way, or they also make external AA battery powered chargers for them, like $20 or so.

For the really long flights, I use this with my 5G.

Any long flight should be fine if you just use it for the music, just do a full charge before the flight.

iPods do not run out of battery charge after 4 hours of use! I've used mine for the entire length of an LAX-CDG nonstop (except the "no electronics" bits on either end, obviously) and still had enough juice left for a taxi ride into town. If you're watching video, 4 hours seems more plausible, but not for music.

I heard that i-pods don't work above 10000feet. Is that true?

It does say in the specs that is the maximum operating altitude. However on commerical flights cabin pressure is kept at or below the equivalent of 8,000 ft.

Why would that be?
