There's a new one coming out? What's the difference between the new one and the current one?

Foady Oct 31, 2007 4:20 am

It's rumored to come out in the first half of November...

Not much of a difference. I'm waiting for a small laptop.

That would require using Windows, though, which I don't think would be fair to inflict upon anyone! ;)

Yes, Amen to that! I want a small Mac laptop with lots of RAM and a big hard drive.

Last night. According to MacRumors

Big thing seems to be the new graphics chip, which is a quite a step up from the previous one.

Evidently, you didn't read the product description. It says "Running on a customized Linux operating system, it responds far more speedily than its Windows counterparts, but it'll run Windows XP quite happily, if you like."

Anyone who knows anything can install any operating system on any computer.

Linux is a variant of Unix. (It's actually a kernel-out workalike.)
OS X is a variant of Unix.

The only difference between them is the Jobs interface. If you like his price/performance, knock yourself out. Mac hardware costs more than all others.

Conventional wisdom that may have been true ten years ago, but which has been disproved by every objective* comparison, like versus like, done since Apple went to Intel chips. The difference today is always tiny and can be in either direction. Those who continue to believe this don't make objective comparisons, but simply point to low-end Windows machines that have no Mac equivalents (Apple is not after that market) and say "it's cheaper than Apple." That's true. If one of those meets your needs, buy it.

True - unless you leave out the cost of the "mandatory operating system" built into Mac prices, which makes the difference today much larger than tiny. With PC architecture, you have your choice of about ten major OSs with dozens of variants, from RTOSs to Home Theater Personal Computer configurations like MythTV.

So there are computers cheaper than Apple (because Jobs wants max margin on every unit)? Sounds like an objective comparison to me!

Thanks. I will. Or I'll buy twice as much computer in PC parts (which Apple won't sell you) for the same money as a mid-range Apple. And get Ubuntu off the Internet for free. Oh - I already did that.

They were announced today, weren't they? I know I read it somewhere.

This is what I read. Not sure if this is what you were all talking about. It's a basic refresh.

Everything looks updated on their web site as far as I can tell.
