Gorilla Mobile

Is anyone else using Gorilla Mobile? I have been a customer for several years and paid my annual fee ($5.95) in January.

All of a sudden my number does not work, when I call, it tells me it has been disabled because it has been "compromised".

When I login online it says "account closed".

The customer service number has been going directly to voicemail for the last few days.

Is this another victim of the cut-throat telephone business?

Is anyone using a similar service that is still working?

Thanks.

I too have subscribed for several years and used it as recently as yesterday without a problem. Perhaps it's some technical screwup (I'm not exactly an expert :) ) so I suppose the next step would be for you to get in touch with them.

Good luck!

Cheers,
Fredd

I read belatedly in your thread that you've been trying to get in touch - maddening!

jetsetter Jul 30, 2007 8:20 am

I've happily used the service for years and just called the 212 access number and got the usual prompt and dial tone to make a call. Perhaps the issue was transient?

OK now

Well, they finally answered this morning after many tries.

They say everything is fine there, no idea why I got the messages, but they fixed my account.

It is working now.

Thanks, Fredd and Jetsetter for your answers.

This thread can be closed.

Glad to hear you finally got through to a human being (we've had the same problem with Vonage) and that it's working again. ^

Closing

Got an e-mail today saying that they will no longer provide international long distance. A pity, as I have used and liked their service for several years.

Any suggestions on a replacement?

Oh no! :(

Thanks for the heads-up as I haven't received an e-mail. Does anybody know about Startec that the Gorilla Mobile site is advertising?

Info in this thread but I'll have to search around and we're just heading out of the country before long too.

The closure is news to me - but they are offering a link to Startec.com for international long distance from your cell phone.

That's really unfortunate - gorilla provided really cheap reliable high quality international service from any phone (home, cell, whereever) - now I'm back to square one as I don't do skype or internet-based telecon.

Platcomike Mar 8, 2009 6:26 pm

I got the message from Gorilla mobile just as I was leaving the country the other day and reminding my wife of how to reach me.

So, I got online and opened a Skype-out account and that is working fine for me. Just had to reprogram the speed dial.

I just called Startec. There are two taxes, 9.5% and 11.9%, on calls, and a $2.50 minimum monthly charge.

The other outfit Gorilla Mobile touted doesn't seem to have a customer service number.

I'm still looking for alternatives for casual low-volume overseas callers such as us.

edited to add: I'm trying an outfit called Tel3 Advantage - all prepaid, no monthly or minimum charges. We'll see how it works.

Please let us know. I was trying to call international off my cell phone this weekend and Gorilla said "All circuits are busy." It's down for good so I cancelled my account. I need something with no monthly fee as I am a sporadic international caller. Thanks!

That's our situation as well

I just signed up with the outfit and made a test call to Canada and it seemed to work fine. It's a prepaid plan. I signed up for the minimum $25 to try it out. I've already set my wireless address book so that it first rings the access number, then a pause, and then the foreign number, and it seems to work fine. I do get a slightly annoying voice saying "you have 1119 minutes left" or whatever but I can live with that.

YMMV. I can't recommend the company as I've just signed up but I'll post back if I have any problems.

Cheers,
Fredd

Cool. I am in particular interested in the call quality - do the calls get through, and if the voice quality is degraded. I know my parents use this long distance carrier at home and often they cannot get their calls through...

There's a boat-load of pre-paid plans, most with PC-based soft phones, and some with local access numbers in various countries.

I have used and been very pleased with these: iconnecthere.com, voipdiscount(and all of its relations, voipstunt, voipbuster, etc.), gizmoproject (less so, and they block calls to some countries I've needed to call).

The voip[discount, stunt, etc.] group have local access numbers, softphone, web front end, and callback. I've used all of these, and their callback setup has been great for me.

I have used http://www.gphone.com/ in the past very cheap rates. They have mobile calls as well as landlines to chose from. They charge your credit card on file when you use the service. No monthly fees or service charges. I have never signed up for mobile service since I use Skype now. I hope this helps. Of course i have no interest in the company just a person who used the service,
