Bose Headsets: ridiculous?

No, this isn't totally a joke thread!

The bluetooth thread reminded me of that guy (and it always is a guy) who makes his way down the airplane aisle to the lav while wearing the bose headphones. And they're not plugged into an ipod, or anything. I seem to see these dudes on every other flight!

Yes, yes, it's totally normal to wear these honkin' huge 'phones on the plane while reading, sleeping, enjoying tunes, etc., but does one really need the noise-cancelling technology in the restroom??

What makes you think the Bluetooth headset thread is a joke?
I think it was seriously started by some serious technophobes who resent every new device that comes down the line because it means sooner or later, they're going to be forced to get one.

*ahem* Not to totally hijack your thread though....
Yeah, I've seen the guy/gal. I'm not for huge honking things like that myself, but I can see where if they're noise-cancelling/noise-absorbing, you'd want to keep them on. Think of it. You've had them on for the past couple hours, they're really comfy and everything's quiet. Would YOU want to take them off and suddenly get FWOOSH *CABIN NOISE ROAR* in your ears?
I wouldn't. I'd probably find a way to make sure I don't trip over the cord or drop it in the 'loo and keep them on.

Really, this whole "technology-as-fashion-accessory" meme is getting pretty ridiculous IMHO. Did you also carp and titter at your officemates when they got a FAX machine back in 1983 ?

Technology-as-fashion-accessory is just an advertising meme and you're falling for it hook, line and sinker. I've done some UI/UE work and people use technology for far more important things than looking good.

Yeah, that's too much. Take the things off for a minute, would you?

Flyin4MAG Jan 30, 2007 8:42 am

If you have to ask the question then you clearly have never owned a pair.

The only time I take off my bluetooth earpiece is to put on my bose headseat. :D I keep them on when I go to the lav as it is easier, just put my iPod on my pocket and go. I dont want to put them in the seat while I am gone.

I often leave my headphones on 'cuz I don't want to deal with the hassle of taking them off, finding a place for them, etc.

Uh, I'm "that guy."

Once we've hit the 10,000ft mark, the Bose go on my head and my MP3 player goes in my shirt pocket with the headset cord coiled behind it. Nothing hanging out that might get caught on something, and less convenient to remove and put back on again than simply leaving them on.

Besides, they're quite effective at canceling the sorts of noises I make in the bathroom. Unfortunately, I'm the only one that doesn't have to listen to them :D

I keep them on to prevent them from being stolen.

A woman had that very issue happen on a recent flight. She got off and said people next to her stole things from her purse while she was in the bathroom. I truly believe her. I trust no one on a plane. It's no different than a subway or a bus. It's irresponsible to think otherwise.

My feelings exactly:D

The problem is your ears adjust to the "quiet," and when you take them off whoa is it loud in the plane. And actually if you look closely at the headphones, you'll notice that the cord to plug them into your music player isn't fixed to the them like it is in most headphones--it's made to detach just for this reason.

I usually hang them around my neck to prevent them from being stolen.

I find it a matter of convenience as it's difficult to fumble around my Y-seat looking for a place to leave them as I go to the lav. The QC-2's make it easy to do this since the cord disconnects from the headset. It was a pain with the QC-1's since it's hardwired.

You weren't aware that they also have a smell cancelling option on the new model?

KosraeTV Jan 31, 2007 12:44 am

I guess I'm not normal. I take them off when I use the bathroom.

Guess I never thought about folks stealing them, kind of hard to hide that they're not there anymore when you get back.
