From the OP of the "other" thread

What makes you think the Bluetooth headset thread is a joke?
I think it was seriously started by some serious technophobes who resent every new device that comes down the line because it means sooner or later, they're going to be forced to get one. *ahem* Not to totally hijack your thread though.... Yeah, I've seen the guy/gal. I'm not for huge honking things like that myself, but I can see where if they're noise-cancelling/noise-absorbing, you'd want to keep them on. Think of it. You've had them on for the past couple hours, they're really comfy and everything's quiet. Would YOU want to take them off and suddenly get FWOOSH *CABIN NOISE ROAR* in your ears? I wouldn't. I'd probably find a way to make sure I don't trip over the cord or drop it in the 'loo and keep them on. Really, this whole "technology-as-fashion-accessory" meme is getting pretty ridiculous IMHO. Did you also carp and titter at your officemates when they got a FAX machine back in 1983 ? Technology-as-fashion-accessory is just an advertising meme and you're falling for it hook, line and sinker. I've done some UI/UE work and people use technology for far more important things than looking good. HOGWASH. If anything, I'm a technophile, and spend a great deal of my discretionary income on technology, especially to repace older (and perfectly good, but nonetheless older) items in favor of newer and better. In case you were unclear as to my original message, I'll repeat: Those headsets (blink blink blink) generally look ridiculous, (when not in use). There are situations (moving through airports with a lot of luggage, driving, etc.) where the use of them is perfectly OK, but the folks who keep them on and active all the time do give the appearance of being "dorks". Or at least a "Borg wannabe" (nerd). Perhaps a similar (and even more ridiculous) analogy would be this: What would you think of someone who carries an electric hand mixer with him/her all the time? Walking down the street? In the grocery store? Certainly there is a time and place to use this device (mashing potatoes comes to mind), but to be so prepared in the case of the inevitable bowl of potatoes coming your way is just goofy. As to the headphone issue, I agree with this post: Take them off when not in use. I have three of these (Sony, Aiwa, and Bose) and believe me, there is no deafening roar when they're removed, and yes, they also give the "dork/nerd" appearance, esp. when enroute to the bathroom. Funny this just came up, I saw the "headphone guy" on a flight yesterday. Thanks for the insight! |

No, this isn't totally a joke thread!
The bluetooth thread reminded me of that guy (and it always is a guy) who makes his way down the airplane aisle to the lav while wearing the bose headphones. And they're not plugged into an ipod, or anything. I seem to see these dudes on every other flight! Yes, yes, it's totally normal to wear these honkin' huge 'phones on the plane while reading, sleeping, enjoying tunes, etc., but does one really need the noise-cancelling technology in the restroom?? I'm not sure I understand your thought process. It seems you would think it ok to take an iPod to the bathroom but not just the headset and it's fine to wear the headset while sleeping but not in the bathroom  Just goes to show we all define 'normal' differently :) |

JD(Who wears a headset but has no desire to be a Borg. After all, who'd want skin like that!?!??) |
Kinda OT, but back when I worked spacecraft mission ops, it was SOP to go to the bathroom with your headset on. Unplug it from the console, stuff the plug in your pants pocket, and go. The reason was that when you came in for your shift, you had to spend all kinds of time getting the earpiece adjusted and the mic where you wanted it and everything just right. (Kind of like a cat getting ready for a nap. ;) ) Once you've got it how you want it, you don't want to have to re-adjust everything every time you take a break. Just unplug it and head for the head.

For the record, it is correct to assume that I have never worn a pair of Bose headphones. I do own and use Shure in-ear headphones. They offer noise-blocking "technology," but, yes, I remove them when I head for the lav.
Maybe one of these days I'll stop at one of the Bose kiosks to give 'em a try, since people seem to like them so much. I'll admit that I'm not a fan of the large, over-ear style of the Bose. They have some 70's retro appeal, but unless you're a DJ, they don't look cool, IMHO. I understand other people don't care what they look like, but hey, whatever floats yer boat. Don't get me wrong, though -- I'm not knocking them because they're not my style. It's just that I am amused by people who wear them to the lav. The "ridiculous" part is that, to me, these people look dorky because, similar to the point of the bluetooth thread, these people may (and I only mean "may") have have either forgotten to take them off (i.e., clueless), or be trying hard to show off their fancy & expensive techno gear (i.e., vain). :) |
Apparantly you are too "special" to have had to go to the back of the plane on an MD-80 to use the coach lavatory. Given that the engines are mounted on the aft fuselage, the answer is YES! I do want to wear my noise cancelling headphone when going back to the noisiest section of the plane. DUH!

So you think they look like dorks.. So what? Should they not wear their headsets for fear of what you might think?
What do you do that people think is silly? Do you stop? I hope not. |
I agree it does seem silly. I use in ear buds which do a much better job of noise reduction and audio reproduction than the overpriced Bose units. THey do stay in when I go to the bathroom as they're a pain to take on and off. That said, had I had the Bose headphones, they'd stay in my seat.
Some people just use them to quiet down sound, to others, they're just another pompous symbol that they can pay $400 for headphones. Quite often, it's the same kind of person who refuses to take their bluetooth earpiece off and they scream their phone conversation to those around them. |
I just leave them on, its too much hassle to take them off and its very easy to just pull the cord out of the headset and go. Why deal with finding a safe place for them, putting them away, getting them back out again, etc. not to mention the extra wear and tear of taking them off and on more that needed for such an expensive item. Nobody should be so self-important as to think my headphones are meant to impress them, whoever they are.
|
I generally don't leave mine on when going to the lav simply out of fear they may somehow end up in the loo.
Other than that, I have no problem with those who leave them on. It seems you would think it ok to take an iPod to the bathroom but not just the headset and it's fine to wear the headset while sleeping but not in the bathroom |
