Treo or Blackberry
 

I've had a Treo, my contract is up soon. Which would you recommend?

In order to get some valid responses, I'd suggest elaborating on a couple of questions. What primary functions are your goal (e.g. e-mail, games, PIM, etc.)? And, what will you be using for a back end (corporate e-mail, Internet e-mail, etc.)? Both devices, as well as ones like the iPaq, have different strengths and weaknesses. My experience (corporate IT manager) indicates that it isn't a matter of one being better than the other, but rather which best fits the individual's need.

I have a Treo. I don't use it for much other than making calls and responding to email.

I travel frequently, so I like being able to receive company email via IMAP. The company does not prefer blackberry or treo or other.

I google, or send a yahoo im - but that's a couple of times a month.

I don't care about playing music, using the camera, editing excel documents. I use my ipod or laptop for that.

My company pays for my cell phone plan and data plan.

It also would be good to know if you are going to use corporate e-mail or personal e-mail. Like if you have a GOOD or BES server available or if you wanted to do regular e-mail.

I will have Internet email and need it to make calls in USA and Asia, email & sync with Outlook, internet browser, camera, mp3 would be a plus also depending on the memory size. Which one?

See if this helps: The way I decide on what device to issue to our employees falls back to what I was asking earlier regarding usage. Blackberries are first and foremost e-mail devices, and they do that very well. They also seem to have longer battery life than most regular cell phones, although obviously not nearly as ergonomic.

On the other hand, if the goal is to have more of a handheld computer full of features, then focus on the Treo, iPaq, et.al.

Just my condensed opinions -- your mileage may vary.

Check out the Nokia E61. Half the weight of the Treo, slightly larger footprint, much larger and crisper screen. I'm a convert.

If you're going to get a Treo 700, get the p. The 700w bites.

I have a new 700p as our company runs GoodLink, along with BES, so I'm limited to BB's Treo, and various WM devices. I'm relatively happy with the Treo, but I won't bang the drum for it as I did my new 600. The rest of the world has caught up.

It's better then the Q, however.

Treo-fan here. It works well as a phone and PDA, but I've got mine pretty loaded up. I use it as mp3 player, video player, game player, web browser, pager, MS-office editor (word / excel), pocket book reader, OTR listening device, and texas hold 'em tutor.

While my 650 is falling a bit behind in the mobile world, I still like it better than any other PDA I've seen. I find the Palm OS far superior to Windows Mobile. Then again, I'm an old fart, so your mileage may vary.

Nokia E61, actually

Interesting. Im tempted by those. I currently have a 700w. It is absolutely the best device Ive had. Palm OS is fine for POP mail but if you have an Exchange server I dont think it can touch WM5. I have push mail coming off of our Exchange server just like a Blackberry if someone had BES, which we dont. I can sync mail, tasks, appointments, and contacts. I can invite people to meetings and respond to such invitations. I can read Word and Excel and on and on. My favorite feature is based on my email. I have dozens and cozens of email subfolders to organize projects and things. When I get an email on the 700w I can move it to anywhere in that folder structure. BB does that but without the BES it cant do it wirelessly like the Treo 700w. From what I was told the Palm Treos cant do it well if at all either.

What functions does the E61 have with Exchange?

I was a long time Blackberry user and ended up dumping it in favor of a Windows mobile device. I use the T-mobile MDA and have an email account through 4smartphone.net so I get true push email. I have many more apps then the Blackberry ever had and better quality apps than any Palm powered device.
