I'm a bit clueless when it comes to all this, so can someone let me know in as basic terms as possible what I'll need? They obviously have either AC or DC ports on these planes and we're already allocated into the correct seats thanks to seatguru.

Thanks in advance.

AA is all standard (automotive-style rather than empower) DC ports, and as such a "car adapter" will suffice (which may portable DVD players come with right out of the box, although not all do.)

They may all be updated now, but in the past, some 757s and MD-80s didn't have any, despite the seat maps; the widebodies should all have them.

I need a Plug...adapter that is ???

I will be flying Open Skies airlines for the first time and I have a question regarding the power ports on their airplanes.

Both Open Skies & Seat Guru say that the airline has "universal power plug-ins" at each seat.

Can anyone who has flown Open Skies tell me what this means? Can I use my 2 prong US plug or do I need to purchase an adapter to plug in my computer?

Thanks for your help

The universal plus accepts US, UK, EU and Oz/NZ-style plugs. No adapter needed.

Will iGo (everywhere85 70-Watt Combo AC/DC Universal Power Adapter with Dual Charging Device PS00120-0005) work with my HP Pavillion on AA?

Thanks in advance,

In-flight power on Asiana and Singapore?

Hello. I'm travelling later this year in C class on Asiana (LHR-ICN-SYD - B777) and Singapore (ADL-SIN-MAN - A330/B777). I'm trying to work out exactly what the power provision is.

Asiana have pictures on their website of theseoutlets which look like standard US-style plugs delivering 110V. Has anyone got real-life experience of these? Are they what they seem?

Same question for SQ - all help gratefully received

The comparable outlets in the new Coach and Biz configurations on Cathay are exactly that and work very nicely.

Per the page you linked, you're good on Asiana:

A 110V power supply is available for use with laptop computers and other devices.
* Applicable aircraft type: Business class on A330-300, B777-200, and
B767-300(HL7528) All classes on B747-400(HL7428)
although if in Y you'd be out of luck on the 777.

Looks like for Singapore, the A330 is still empower (15V) or none at all.

Has anyone tried the Cobra air/auto inverter? I'm going to be on CO EWR-HKG (777-200s) next month and am actually going to try and bring electronics.

Two questions:
- does CO have car-style outlets (as AA does) or Empower-style ones? It's not clear from the link if that has an Empower plug or just the car-style one.
- what is the rated wattage of the ports on CO? I was under the impression that most airline power outlets were not rated for 150W, and that would risk having the over-current protection kick in.

Laptop Power Settings

I lower the screen brightness using the power settings in the Windows Control Panel. This saves on energy usage so my battery lasts longer.

CO has emPower on their 767s; universal plugs on the 752s, 772s and 73Es.

I believe the ports are only 75-90W but I am not positive.

I wouldn't bank on having anything more than 65 watts for power. I know that's UA has 65 watts and 75 watt power is the most I've ever heard of in seat. If you're in power saver mode you should have no problems being well under the limit and there are very few core duo laptops out there that exceed that power envelope.

I have a MR coming up in a few weeks from ORD-HKG-SIN on a UA 747, so to guarantee I'll be carrying 4 batteries that are rated at about 29 hours total runtime.

According to that, seems that I can just plug in my macbook pro's adapter straight to the outlet. Am I right?

Follow up question: I tried plugging my Macbook Pro 17 power adapter into the standard plug on a CO 739 - the iPhone charger works fine, but the Macbook charger light wouldn't come on..

Is the power delivered from the seat insufficient to charge a Macbook?

Check the wattage of your laptop adapter. I believe that many aircraft power systems may not handle a 96 watt laptop load. 72 watts is fine. 96W can get iffy. If you run into problems on the flight, you could look at trying to adjust your power settings so that your laptop will draw less power than normal when plugged in. That *may* work.

Good luck!

Yea, you are not likely to need more anyways.
