Intel macbook . Bye bye powerbook.

The new dual core macbook was announced today.

It's exactly the excuse I've been waiting for to upgrade my old B&W G3. My new 20" iMac is on order as I type (and swise, if you're reading this and can help move it along, I'd be a very happy guy :) )

I love how they are poking fun with the "Dull PC". The "macbook" is now just a high-end pc like any other...

Also amazing how it is suddenly 5 times faster than the G5, despite Apple claiming all these years that "MHz don't matter"... With the possible exception of the magnetic power cable I don't see any real innovation here...

Perhaps I'll buy one so I can install Windows on it :D

You can install windows on the old powerbook. It's called Virtual PC.

That excuse has been made for years, but what most people don't mention is that it is

1) Extremely slow, even on a quad core G5
2) Not very compatible; only half the applications I ever tested on it worked

In the end I guess I'm just fed up with Apple users claiming that their old machines can "run" Windows. You can emulate almost anything on anything, whether it works well is another matter.

Great product, terrible name.

And it'll be the sexiest d*mn PC on the market. :D

if only apple put the intel chip into the current PB lineup, added isight as well as the remote, bluetooth 2.0+edr and all the new stuff, i'd preferred that than to create a new line.

comments?

Heathen. Maybe you could by a ferrari and swap the engine with a Ford, too.

What would be the difference? That's basically what they did. What exactly don't you like about the new one?

Can the new MacBook boot both OSX and Windoze?

If so, I know what I'm getting for my birthday...

I can't give any orders any special treatment (besides good wishes), but I can keep an eye on it to make sure it desn't get stuck anywhere.

PM your order # to me, and I'll watch it for you.

Read it more carefully. The comparison (4x, not 5x, but that's not the point) is with the G4, not the G5. There was never a G5 PowerBook.

Comparing processor speeds using only MHz makes as much sense as comparing the speed of a rabbit and a horse using only steps per minute, without considering stride length. It's a battle the AMD folks fight all the time, since (compared to Intel) their processor designs have slower clocks but get more work done per clock cycle.

not natively. I suspect that people are already trying to find ways for it to do so though.

I'm not sure if Virtual PC will run on these machines. If it did, it would run as an emulation of an emulation, since Virtual PC itself is a PowerPC App. Virtual PC would run using the Rosetta Power PC emulator and then would emulate Windows on top of this.

Once there is a version of Office for the Intel Macs, it will include a version of Virtual PC that will run natively. This is speculation on my part (which I'm loathe to do), but I would guess that there will be a significant performance boost with this release.
