Palm Treo Windows Mobile

WooHoo...Am i first?

--
SAN FRANCISCO, Sep 26, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Verizon Wireless First to Market with New Treo Smartphone

Mobile-computing pioneer Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) and software pioneer Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT) today announced a strategic alliance to accelerate the smartphone market segment with a new device for mobile professionals and businesses. Palm has licensed the Microsoft(R) Windows Mobile(R) operating system for an expanded line of Treo(TM) smartphones, the first of which will be available on Verizon Wireless' national wireless broadband network. The news was revealed in a press conference with Ed Colligan, president and chief executive officer of Palm, Inc.; Bill Gates, chairman and chief software architect of Microsoft Corp.; and Denny Strigl, president and chief executive officer of Verizon Wireless.

The collaboration gives customers more choices and marks a dedicated effort to deliver one of the world's most innovative smartphone solutions on the software platform favored by many businesses. Treo smartphones combine the hallmark Palm experience of a full-featured mobile phone with email, messaging, web access(1) and organizational software -- in an attractive, compact design. The new Treo smartphone takes advantage of the Windows Mobile 5.0 platform in multiple ways, offering Outlook Mobile, Office Mobile and Internet Explorer Mobile built into the smartphone, as well as direct access to Exchange Server 2003 for mobile access to information.(2) In addition, the new Treo will operate with Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess service, the largest high-speed wireless broadband network in the United States. Verizon Wireless expects the new Treo smartphone to be available to its customers in early 2006.

Am amazed about the hullabaloo regarding this device. Similar devices have been around for ages, in my opinion it is a real blow to Palm and their own OS.

The device is too big, underpowered and has a display that is too small for decent use. HP made a similar handheld a year ago and it got very poor reviews.

With devices like the imate Jasjar (the HTC universal) and the HTC Wizard coming to shelves within months I don't see much of a future for a Windows Treo. Not to mention the limited marketshare it will get as a Verizon device compared to other (GSM) phones.

Really unimpressed.

Early '06? Are they insane?

Even Big Bill didn't look too excited at the launch.

I'm about ready to have a PPC-6700 shipped my way unless someone knows of something better out there - we have a much better corporate discount with Sprint than elsewhere, and I've confirmed our GoodLink infrastructure will work with it after next week's 4.5 upgrade.

It's sad - Handspring started off with a nice vision, and the 600 was a leap ahead of what else was out there. Not much progress in the intervening 2 years.

I'm sure Bill G was laughing his backside off. Here he is, master of the universe sitting at a conference with PALM introducing a Microsoft powered product.

If he were ANY richer he could have purchased the live footage of hell freezing over.

Its been a funny year, Apple goes to Intel, Palm to WindowsMobile... I wonder what is next?

Actually, I sold it on Ebay this weekend. I just couldn't make the switch, and constantly moving between 2 PC's was a hassle. Made a nice profit off it too :D

I still have my 12" powerbook sitting gathering dust. I tried... I REALLY did. I SO wanted to use OS X. But... just couldn't do it. I'm windows ingrained.

As for the Treo 700.... AAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH! I love my 650, I REALLY like Palm OS. I don't know why but it appeals to me much more than Windows Mobile. The thing is, the form factor doesn't work AT ALL for WinMobile, screen is way too small, but it works just fine for Palm. Sooo I s'pose I'll hang on to my 650 for dear life now that I got it to quit rebooting all the freakin' time.

Well, except of course for one of the several 3G devices offered by Nokia, HTC or i-mate.

OK, I can admit when I'm wrong. Especially if it will help others.

I got a PPC-6700. It recognizes and can be configured to my encrypted wi-fi at home (and my neighbors' in-the-clear signals). It can repeatedly benchmark 800kbps on a modem test. I does Bluetooth. Etc., etc. I'm sure it will stream video very well, download ringtones very quickly, etc. All very cool in a propeller-head kind of way.

But it's a lousy portable email device and phone. GoodLink doesn't work with it (don't listen to your "IT folks" - Good tells me "next release"). Using other tools, the need to pull out the keyboard, wait for the screen to flip, and use both hands to type is just a negative productivity enhancer. With a couple hundred uses a day for email, tasks, calendar, etc., it would kill me.

So it's going back.

And my respect for the Treo form factor and ability to quickly use it with one hand grows.

I'll hang on until the 700w or a Sprint version - probably Windoze as PalmOS seems to be going the way of the Netscape browser. The geek stuff is nice, but I want something that helps me get my work done.

You need a Blackberry :)

Been there, done that too. Old style and newer 7100. I need a real keyboard, not the 3-letters-to-a-key-I'll-guess-for-you keyboard, along with one-hand operation. Maybe it's my quirky needs, but the Treo/Good combo just works.

Hopefully an EV-DO version will be out in a few months on Sprint. WiFi would be nice, but I can live without it. PalmOS/WM5, I can live with either. The tide is turning so WM5 will be fine if that's where Sprint ends up.

Palm Treo 700w releasing tomorrow

The Treo 700w is all set to be released tomorrow at the stores. i was able to order one from our B2B today and will recieve it tomorrow.

Palm has already setup a support page Link

2 year pricing is $499 standard before any discounts and there is a $100 instant discount if you also get their unlimited data plan in addition to voice plan.

This phone is EVDO capable and is generating quite a buzz

Does Palm think WiFi is a bad word? In their entire lineup they only ever made one WiFi enabled device.
