Agreed. WiFi on this device would have made it just too good. But seems like Palm has some beef with WiFi. The only route is to get one of those SDIO WiFi cards which Palm supports on the Treo 700w. They have some duh like instructions for WiFi SDIO cards on that same link i posted. |
Aren't Palms key customers cellular providers? Would they not want their customers to use their networks and not wifi networks?

Vzw is also releasing XV6700 tomorrow which does have WiFi and 320x240 resolution ( unlike the 240x240 resolution of Treo 700w). So Palm would appear to have a legitimate beef.LOL  But this phone is very good and the lack of WiFi was not a detriment to my decision as i can pop in an SDIO WiFi if i want. here are the full specs Features That Increase Mobile Productivity: * EV-DO access for fast downloads of data, email and large attachments; * Robust Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system; * Intel® XScale® technology-based processor; * Ability to send and receive email from multiple corporate and personal email accounts, with built-in support for Microsoft Office Outlook Mobile, Hotmail, Yahoo!, AOL, and other POP3 and IMAP accounts; * On-device access to Microsoft Office Word Mobile, Office Excel Mobile and Office PowerPoint Mobile for viewing, editing and creating Word and Excel Mobile documents, as well as viewing PowerPoint Mobile presentations. In addition, with Picsel PDF viewer (included on installation CD), customers can view PDF documents; * Unified messaging application, including email, SMS and MMS; * Support for Wireless Sync to provide the convenience of push email and easy access to personal information-management tools, such as contacts and calendar, as well as enterprise tools, such as device management and file synchronization; and * Enough memory to manage business and personal digital needs in one place with 128MB of memory and 60MB of dedicated user storage. Other Treo 700w Features and Benefits: * New 1.3-megapixel camera to shoot crisp, clear digital images and videos; * Integrated Bluetooth® 1.2 wireless technology for communicating with compatible headsets, car kits, computers and printers equipped with Bluetooth technology; * Removable battery and non-volatile memory; * Voice Command for voice dialing; * Expansion card slot (SD, SDIO, and MultiMediaCard compatible); and * 240x240 transflective (TFT) screen. * Infrared Port * Up to 280 Minutes Usage Time * Up to 360 Hours Standby Time * 6 oz. * 2.30H x 4.40W x 0.90D inches |

Hopefully an EV-DO version will be out in a few months on Sprint. WiFi would be nice, but I can live without it. PalmOS/WM5, I can live with either. The tide is turning so WM5 will be fine if that's where Sprint ends up. |

Palm has already setup a support page Link 2 year pricing is $499 standard before any discounts and there is a $100 instant discount if you also get their unlimited data plan in addition to voice plan. This phone is EVDO capable and is generating quite a buzz  yes, the guy at the palm setup here in vegas tonite said, tomorrow was the retail launch and they should have them in stores buy the weekend. Verizon is making a big push. NOT cingular, I'm switching. |

What about USB? When I tried out the 6700, it has USB broadband but not BT. That's probably good enough for me. |

Yet Verizon Wireless is partly responsible for the 700W's crippled Bluetooth (short-range wireless) features. For example, Verizon has turned off the feature that lets your laptop get online using the Treo as a wireless antenna. You can use a wireless headset, but the phone works only with some Bluetooth-equipped cars; the Toyota Prius, for example, isn't on the list. (If history is any guide, these features will be available from other carriers when they get the Treo 700W later this year.) |

Early '06? Are they insane? Even Big Bill didn't look too excited at the launch. I'm about ready to have a PPC-6700 shipped my way unless someone knows of something better out there - we have a much better corporate discount with Sprint than elsewhere, and I've confirmed our GoodLink infrastructure will work with it after next week's 4.5 upgrade. It's sad - Handspring started off with a nice vision, and the 600 was a leap ahead of what else was out there. Not much progress in the intervening 2 years. [/QUOTE]

In silicon valley, many high tech product development professionals view the Treo 600 and 650 and 700 projects as "what could have been". The Handspring team designing the Treo products are great at R&D and user interface, but made many poor design decisions regarding manufactureability and component modularity (e.g. unable to swap components easily and using many proprietary single-source components). This has led to very long design cycles and cost overruns for the complicated smartphone designs, and resulting in high difficulty to make power management tradeoffs of battery life against the latest features like WiFi and 2Megapixel camerphones for Treo 700 even though it took Palm 2 years to roll out after Treo 650 intro. The huge pent-up demand & backorder of each new generation invariably disappear all too soon for Palm to effectively capitalize on the initial buzz of the cool designs. Ultimately Palm Treo product lines end up not being able to sell what could have been many additional tens of millions per platform. To add insult to injury, Palm's inability to sell the extra tens of millions Treo 600 & 650 products resulted in PalmOS falling behind in smartphone OS installed base sales compared to Windows Mobile and Symbian. So when Microsoft dangled some co-marketing dollars and development fees to port Treo to Windows Mobile, Palm ultimately succumbs to that "siren's song". You got to hand it to Bill Gates for his mastery in turning a former rival into YAWL (Yet Another Windows Licensee) :p |
In my humble opinion. The phone looks great but I'd hold off until other wireless carriers pick it up. Verizon wireless made all kinds of goofy proprietary mods to their Treo650. The VZ mail alone truly soured me on their Treo650. Bit the bullet on an unlocked 650.

I've heard conflicting rumors on how long VZW will have the exclusive on the 700. VZW getting the exclusive was really stupid. What about GSM?
I've heard it will be exclusive for either 6 months or 60 days. I'm hoping for the latter., so I can get it with either Sprint or Cingular. |

Exclusive in what sense? I'm pretty sure Sprint has been first out with the last few versions - at least the 600 and 650, be several months. I'd be surprised if Sprint isn't the largest Treo seller.
