Home Stereo Setup Recommendations

Moving into a new apartment soon. Need some recommendations on sounds systems and setup.

Looking for sound system in three areas: Bedroom, Study, Living Room.

Thinking of separate sounds systems in each area. However, want to be able to play MP3 music from one central source (probably PC or anything someone else can recommend) and listen in either one of the three areas.

For example, play from my PC or alternate sound system in the study, but the music is playing through the sound system in bedroom.

What setup do you guys have and any recommendations for me?

Thanks.

www.sonos.com is an awesome device, and not too expensive.

As always THANKS! :)

This looks great! Now just have to figure out how to ship it to Hong Kong! May just have to personally pick it up the next time I'm in the US.

Many stores in Europe have them as well at the moment. Sonos doesn't ship abroad. Your only other option is to purchase and send to someone in the US, and have them forward it on to HKG. It is a fairly large box and each unit is quite heavy (since the zoneplayers also have the amp in them).

Thanks. I found on their forum that total weight is 31lbs for two zone players and remote. Have to check on the size of the box as well.

May wait till December to get it.

Sonos has been on sale in the UK since June, I own an a/v company in London and we've installed several large houses. I have to say that it's the first product that I've sold that I want to install at home.

FWIW; some Bestbuy stores are carrying it. You'll need a Bestbuy with a "Magnolia" home theater section.

Great analogy!

Scott, I know you are also a fellow Tivoite. Obviously,we can stream music to any room with a Tivo in it; sound quality depends on what speakers are hooked up to the Tv in each room. How would you compare the Sonos vs.using Tivo/Galleon to stream music?

My Sonos is great!

I recently installed the Sonos in 2 areas of my home and only have good things to say about the system.

Some things to consider...

System needs to be connected to a router and the internet

The remote did not have a cradle charger / dock - which was "expected" out soon. This would be nice to have as it provides a place to store the expensive remote. It may be out now I haven't looked since August.

Since it draws from music files on your PC or several if on a network - you need to keep them operational to use the system. I added a Buffalo "Link Station" as a stand alone hard drive and store my music library on it.

That is what I do at home. I also used a system called AVCast to stream off one tivo to all the rooms and TV's in the house and be able to use the remote.

As nice as Sonos is, the last thing I need in my house is another device :)

Ah, what has "need" ever had to do with it when it comes to gadgets? :) I will have to check out AVCast.

Checked out Sonos. While it is nice, I don't need an extra amp that comes with each of Sonos' zone players.

I found Roku and Squeezebox2.

Any thoughts on these?

I have been very happy with my Apple Airport express/amp combo. My only problem is that i can't stand iTunes...

Roku is realy nice too, I find their remotes rather limited, and you'll need a soundbridge with a fairly large display to be able to read what you are listening too, but other than that it is a real nice product. The Squeezebox is pretty much the same thing, but I find the Soundbridges look much nicer, plus they can be wall mounted.
