wow, very impressive.

slider to zoom, keyboard shortcuts to pan without the page being reloaded, major streets highlighted in yellow, and local results when you want them too, very nice.

oh, and pretty fast too.

Is it US only? I tried several places (NZ, Aust, Europe) but error'ed each time.

Amazing. Google introduces something that'll kick the pants off Mappoint and all the other crappy services out there.

This rocks, and explains why they puchased Keyspan last year.

Can't wait till they integrate maps into their search engine.

The only other thing it's missing is real time traffic like Yahoo! maps...otherwise it seems like it trumps the others for US mapping.

actually it works for Canada too. this is absolutely the coolest technology i've seen yet.
you can move the map by dragging it, you can get directions from the airport to the hotel by just tying in the airport code and the hotel name. now how awesome is that.

I was able to get maps of a number of Canadian cities.

Awesome search engine, although they need a "clear results" link some place in there... but going back to the home page works just as well.

Wow! Yahoo Maps was already pretty good, but this is a big improvement.

I can even pin-point streets and addresses in some new development.

Doesn't work on one of my machines, map comes up but no indicator where on the map it is, no slider, etc. On the other it works fine.

All the other mapping softwares work fine on the one google doesnt' work on, so they may want to fix that.

Can you save locations like you could in Yahoo Maps?

I use mapping software a lot for work as well as for making travel plans. I love the look of the Google map and how it works. But I've noticed one limitation already: you can't copy a map and pasted it into another application such as an email or a Word document. At least with Microsoft Streets and Trips, you can copy and paste maps; the copyright notice appears automatically at the bottom of whatever map you paste.

Same here, but I've noticed several limitations with the data. No streets for my subdivision (about 18 months old) appear on its maps, so its data may not be entirely current. When I searched for my address, it brought me to a map of the city, but there was no marker for my address nor any message about not being able to locate the address.

Also, in experimenting, I searched for restaurants in my zip code. There were many which did not appear, and the locations it showed on the map for those it listed (that I checked) were at least several blocks.

I am HOPING that this may be the new look of NAVTEQ maps, I'll see what I can find out, this format, really just colors and fonts, is WAY better than anything they have out now.

While the interface is very cool and certainly an improvement over Mapquest et al, I question some of the driving directions.
They don't seem to be the quickest/ most efficient way of getting there.

For example, I typed in Chicago to Seattle and it routes you through North Dakota :confused: !! That makes no sense. You can just take I-90 all the way.

Also did Chicago to Ft Wayne, Indiana and I question that routing as well. This program definitely seems to ignore the rule of "shortest distance between two points is a straight line", rather it seems to favor the Interstate highways....

Just my 2 cents (if it's even worth THAT much :D )

maps.yahoo.com, mappoint, and mapquest would show you the same routing.

What's the mileage on the I-90 route vs. the route they give you? Perhaps they give perference based on actual mileage or average speed or some other metric.

I checked the route from my house to my parents and it was, well, interesting to say the least. Perhaps it might have been shortest in distance but certainly not shortest in time. However, I do think this is a great start!

I like the presentation of this one.. as well as the freedom to query in any manner you want... instead of trying to fit it into those boxes. ^^

google maps now has a "Satellite" link that you can click on to view the area. and it works, complete with zoom!
