Blackberrys on the Road?

I am thinking about getting a blackberry, but am not sure how it works. Will I be able to access my web-based emails on ther blackberry? Or does everything have to be forwarded to a special blackberry.net email address before i can receive it? I want to be able to check and answer my emails from my own domain name without having to respond from a different email address. Any experienced users??

Thanks!

I am not sure of the answer, but I know the folks in Travel Technology will have the answer for sure.

No. Web based services don't work well on the Berry's browser.

Or does everything have to be forwarded to a special blackberry.net email address before i can receive it?

You have several options:

You use the blackberry.net email address for everything
You forward everything to the Blackberry.net address
You have the BWC (The Blackberry Web Client) pick up your mail for you (requires POP access to the mail account).
You download the mail onto your PC and use the "redirector" offered by Blackberry to forward the mail for you
The last option is to combine the Blackberry Enterprise Server with your existing Exchange or Notes environment, pretty expensive ($2000>) and not viable for just one uesr.

I want to be able to check and answer my emails from my own domain name without having to respond from a different email address. Any experienced users??

Yes, but you can only SEND from one email address at a time, you need to set it up in the webclient each time. There is no way (at the moment) to configure multiple senders.

And in the meantime, let me move this to traveltech where you will get even more help :)

You might want to look into the T-mobile Sidekick (Danger Hiptop), it CAN send from multiple email addresses, you setup the POP accounts on the device.

Only problem with it is that it is GSM1900 ONLY so it won't roam outside NA.

Plus, it's browser is much better than the Blackberry and it offers an AIM IM client. It is however not as reliable and it's batterylife sucks.

So if I understand correctly, I can have my emails downloaded to microsoft outlook on my computer by my assistant while on the road, and they can be redirected to the blackberry? When I reply to these emails will it appear as an email from my domain name or from my blackberry address? Sorry Im new to these types of devices!!

The redirector is based on rules, so it will forward whatever you want, but relies on the PC being on all the time and your connection working.

The "from" address can be anything you want, you set that up in the webclient so it can be your own domain if you want it to be.

As for being new to them, don't worry, we are all new to gadgets at one point, I'm here to help :)

Thanks so much ScottC, well my computer is on in my office all the time anyway, so no problem. Are you saying that you forward emails from outlook express to your blackberry? Where do you go to do that? Also, we have a POP3 server, is there anyway to just send emails directly from the server to the Blackberry?

Thanks again!

You don't do it in Outlook, the redirector is a Blackberry application that takes care of it for you :)

If you have an existing POP3 server then it should be fairly easy to setup a copy of all email so it goes to your regular account AND the Blackberry, but it depends on the kind of POP server. IMHO that is always the best solution as it's faster and more reliable.

What ScottC said. If your "web-based email" is web-based only, it's pretty ugly. However, you mentioned downloading to your Outlook -- if you can do that, you can almost certainy do what ScottC said.

I would like to have it forwarded straight from my POP3 server to the Blackberry, but for some reason 6 months ago when I originally tried this, I couldnt do it. Any ideas on if some POP3 servers allow this and some do not?

When you say POP3 server, do you mean your office has a physical POP3 server, or are you referring to the POP email service your ISP offers?

SkyTeam777 Jun 16, 2004 11:21 am

Well our registered domain name is hosted by a POP3 server. It is not physically located in our office. We have DSL here that we use to access emails.

What is a POP 3 server?

OK, sorry, when you said you had a pop3 server I assumed you meant you had a physical computer server in the office.

Your best best is to call the ISP and ask if they can do forwarding of all emails to a seperate address.

Any decent ISP should be able to do that.

Many ISPs (ValueWeb, Network Solutions) have web interfaces where you can log on and type in the redirects yourself. It's simple and takes effect in minutes.
