Odd. I'm assuming you have the little update that was put out the other day? CDDB is such an integral part of the experience. I've never had problems with it working (on a Mac I mean)....

Hope someone makes them aware of all the bugs.

"little update"? = 19Mb...

There were bugs in it that never should have been there in the first place, I don't know how they do their beta testing but someone might want to review it...

Oddly and worringly, without the firewall it works fine and picks up the CDDB information. So now can rip CDs but is painfully slow compared with the Musicmatch software bundled with the iPod.

So now I'm left ripping the CDs using Musicmatch and transferring them to the iPod using iTunes. Musicmatch has much better renaming funcionality etc., esp if importing downloaded MP3s.

My advice? iTunes looks nicer, but stick to Musicmatch or your other favourite ripper.

I guess we'll just need to wait for the NEXT update... If in this day and age Apple can't even write an efficient visualization routine, a fast ripper or a CDDB connection that doesn't need open firewall ports then all hope is lost for them when it comes to making Windows software...

They can (write software like that), just not for that particular OS. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...um/biggrin.gif

Although why anyone actually cares about the visualization is beyond me. I think I've looked at it once back when iTunes first came out a few years ago, just to say "Oh, cool, I guess".

But I know, it's the principle.

I actually DO turn them on every now and then, but yes, it is about the principal, as I said, if you claim you have the "best windows app" ever and can't even get a visualization to work then you make yourself look silly.

I noticed a Knowledge Base article that addressed the firewalll issues some have experienced:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html/?artnum=93434

Also, the article below has an explanation of some of the error messages in iTunes for Windows and for OS X:

Do you have a knowledgebase article on why the knowledgebase doesn't work? http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...um/biggrin.gif

o, in many cases, alternatives to iApps exist or were around prior to release of the Apple-developed offerings. Furthermore, the iApps usually win out in side-by-side comparisons with their Wintel counterparts, so any gushing over them is warranted.

Let's not forget that OS X itself was developed from an existing OS and actually ran (nicely) on Intel machines.

New version is out, and they listened to us; you can finally maximise the application!

I installed iTunes and actually liked/used it...for about 3 days. But it has a problem that makes it unusable in my book:

Streaming: horrible. constantly stopping and rebuffering. No way to change the cache/buffer size. What's worse, when it is minimized and has to rebuffer, it insists on throwing up a big dialog with a default "cancel" button in the foreground. If you're typing something when this happens, you hit the cancel button and it shuts down. Stupid.

With the release of WinAmp 5, I have switched back. The UI is vastly improved, I really like the little fade-in/out track display even with streaming radio when minimized, and the WinAmp TV actually works really well. Pity that all I can get are endless music videos and the SFO NBC station. Man, I had forgotten how bad American network TV sucked.

from the edit menu, choose preferences, then click the 'advanced' tab, and choose the buffer size.
