Please keep the posts to "Travel Technology"

I ask that we please keep the posts here to "Travel Technology" related items (Products/services that travelers will likely use/encounter - PDA's, laptops, hotel high speed internet connections, cell phones, digital cameras, MP3 players, portable DVD players, Internet Cafe's, etc). I'm willing to be broad minded, but as moderator, I have to draw the line somewhere.

If your question is not "Travel Technology" related, I ask that you post it on one of the many general/specific technology oriented message boards loacted throughout the web.

Just doing my job, folks.

Thanks

sounds very reasonable, thank you!

A good idea, but the new topics are extremely limited here, maybe 3-5 a day....just something to keep in mind.

we need a technology forum. When ScottC posted about Windows vs Mac in Omni, it was moved here. FlyerTalkers in general are more technologically saavy than other boards, except for specialized PC boards. We really need this channel to talk about these topics.

Agree. Besides, this board is not inundated (thankfully!) with too many extraneous topics so the occasional foray into non-travel tech is permissible, I think.

It's not a "quantity" issue. If the volume of messages gets to high, I'll request they add another moderator.

Here is how I look at it: All of the forums in Flyertalk are "travel" specific, except for OMNI. Based on that, and the original description given to this forum, I believe those who visit here expect to see messages that are "travel" technology related. I know I did when I first joined.

If the Flyertalk administration update the description at somepoint, that's fine with me.

The posts here are travel technology related - we are travellers, and it's our technology. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/wink.gif

I would be in favor of defining the scope of this forum to be relatively broad, to include non-travel technology topics. This is a useful place to ask ignorant questions and get helpful advice from some very knowledgable people, and sometimes get pointers to other sites. And I think the "quantity" issue is somewhat relevant. If there were so many non-travel messages that it became difficult to discuss travel tech, that would make a stronger case for focusing on travel tech. But I don't think we're in any danger of that at the moment.

Anyway, happy to abide by whatever the rules are, but would prefer a broader forum.

One suggestion: When you close a thread becasue it's not "travel" enough, shouldn't you move it to OMNI as a courtesy to the OP?

ScottC Nov 22, 2003 4:04 pm

I personally would appreciate an all thing technical forum, easier to moderate and easier to find the help you need to answer any questions preventing it from getting lost in the wilderness of Omno...

I agree. My expectation is that it would remain mainly travel oriented in any instance given our community. But, it would be nice to have the occasional discussion about tech stuff around the periphery. I also think it will avoid a lot of too'ing and froe'ing on threads such as "Which Plasma monitor would be best to view my travel Pics"

eastwest Nov 22, 2003 8:30 pm

I'm not as technical as some members here, but I can occasionally lend some helpful advice. If threads are moved to OMNI I won't be able to post there because I haven't registered for OMNI.

I defer to the moderators in this situation, but I do hope that a variety of tech topics are allowed to remain in this forum.

I think I agree with a looser interpretation of Travel Technology that would encompass travel technology or technology.

I agree, I think the wilderness of Omni technical posts should be limited to "urgent" type requests where a much broader audience will notice it quickly, ala Gaucho style questions. Where as more long term questions like "which one should I buy" are better place in this forum.

Just my two cents.
