Companies that use Linux
 

In the eve, of one of the most incredible and ridiculous meetings that have ever taken place in this earth, I need to ask for some information.

I am basically looking for companies that use Linux. The demented systems manager of the company that I work for, refuses to install Linux on the premises that it is a very risky operating system. He says that due to the fact that is an "open source", it is a risk factor, and that he will not compromise the security of the company http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...m/rolleyes.gif


Anyway, I found these places, and it seems that there is a plethora of those out there.

I know that he is completely out of his mind, but what has been your experience with it. What mission critical applications are you using it with.

There are tons of other ludicrous details about this whole ordeal, but it will take 2 or 3 pages to explain

Well, he has not only brainwashed, but completely lobotomized.

He is in a power trip of buying a $500,000 Solaris server, without using his existing resources.

We bought a Dell server with 4 Xeon 2 Ghz processors, 8GB RAM, and EMC Clariion CX600 Fibre-Channel storage unit.

And he says that this is a temporary unit http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...m/confused.gif

He wants to torpedo the success of it by removing the CX600 and going with 5 new SCSI internal drives, and to top it all off, using a RAID 5 http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/eek.gif, for databases.

We are all baffled at work.

Tomorrow is a big meeting, and hopefully we can get things back on track.

EMC's aren't exactly cheap and they are have the poorest performance of aall of the tier 1s.

You can build high-pperformance storage for probably less than the cost of your annual maintenance with EMC.

What the hell?

We're a HW design company and have a HUGE Linux compute farm. If this guy thinks Linux is unstable he needs to get a clue... Even Big Blue: IBM, uses Linux for scalable customer solutions.

Anyone looking to deploy NEW Solaris servers should be doing it solely to keep backward compatibility for apps that haven't moved to Linux.

Oracle is running all of their directly hosted customers on Linux in a big data center in Austin.

Well, I just had the meeting from Hell.

He is ready to switch our Windows 2000 Advanced Server to SCO UnixWare.

So, he is going to have a brand new OS, configured, ready to go, with Progress and QAD MFG/PRO installed.

Between SCO and Windows I'd pick Windows...

These people are so narrow minded, that I couldn't sell them a boat even of they were drowning in the middle of the ocean.

I give up. As a consultant I have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

I have make recommendations, presentations and entered into arguments with them.

The reality is that this guy just wants to spend money foolishly.

I am very tired and frustrated.

All I can do is to try to make things as good as I can.

Speaking as a CIO, this guy has a fiduciary responsibility to his shareholders, and he isn't holding it up very well. In this economy, nobody is going to look favorably on not doing due dilligence on lower-cost aternatives. Know anybody on the Board of Directors you could approach on the QT?

I wish there is something we could do. This is a privately held company, and he is best buddies with the President. Everyone knows he is a real #@#$, but he has way too much power.

Like I told some of the managers there. It is my responsibility that you guys use all your hardware and software in the most efficient way. Maximizing benefits, and making sure that the server serves its useful life. If you guys want to use it as a door stop, that is your prerogative.

Have complained, showed them why their approach is the equivalent of me crying "Iceberg, straight ahead", and the captain of the Titanic, doesn't even care, and increases speed.

One of the most frustrating situations ever.

And as a consultant I shouldn't care. But it is hard for me to do so.

I care for the results of my work.
