Anyone here have a Nook (BN e-reader)

My sister gave me a Nook Color years ago. It has served me well, especially for traveling. Suddenly, last night (after I just bought a new cover) it decided to "reorganize" itself. Today when I turned it on, it wanted me to set it up as if it were brand new. However, it won't let me get past choosing the wireless network. My options are to "forget" the network or cancel the network. Occasionally, it lets me get to the point of connecting to my network. When I click on "connect," I get a network error and it sends me back to choosing my wireless network again.

I realize it might be just time to move on (they no longer make Nooks), but I have several downloaded and unread books. Does anyone with any similar experience have a recommendation as how to read them? A new BN e-reader? iPhone (which I'm currently using to read the book I had started), iPad (I haven't had one for years - I like my MacBook Air just fine) or some other tablet that allows the BN app? I'd rather have something bigger than the phone but more manageable than a laptop.

BTW, I actually have a real Barnes and Noble store a several miles away. Should I just take the Nook there and ask for technical help?

Don’t get another nook - get any tablet you want and load their app to read nook books. Iirc, they opened up their platform a long time ago so that the nooks are just bn branded android tablets. You can probably even side load the bn app onto a kindle fire- I’ll let you know in a day or two.

I mostly use my iPhone to read ebooks, since it’s convenient to not have to carry multiple things around.

I still have a nook. Last one I bought used, refurbed off of Amazon. I like reading in the pool and bath, so didn't want to use my ipad to read (I have a waterproof Nook). But really just going with a tablet of any kind is the best option and using the Nook and Kindle apps, because then you aren't stuck with one technology. Don't bother going to the store. They won't have a clue how to fix it for you.

Are you saying don't get another Nook because of the quality or don't limit the choices to only Nook because the app will work with any tablet?

I saw the refurbished Nooks on Amazon - worth it you think? They might have a sale at the store, however.

There is a way to connect your Nook to a computer and put your Nook into USB debug mode (hold power button and up volume usually) to get visibility to the Nook's storage. If the books are recoverable, you should be able to move them onto your computer/laptop and transfer to another device (maybe?). My gut feeling is that the Nook somehow did a factory reset and restore, so any data you loaded onto the Nook is gone.

How did you get these unread ebooks onto the Nook? Did you buy them from BN? If so, shouldn't you be able to re-download them to any device from the BN website?

I believe you are correct that any data on the Nook is gone from the Nook itself but I'm not concerned with the availability of the books once I settle on a tablet, as I purchased them from BN. I can currently access them from my iPhone. I guess I'm just asking for advice as to what would be the best tablet for my situation.

Really, only two companies make tablets worth buying: Apple and Samsung (jury is still out on Google Pixel tablets). If you want to go cheap, you can probably get a Samsung A-series table to meet your needs (and maybe trade-in your Nook for a bit of credit).

Otherwise, I would probably just look into investing in a Kindle. There are lots of tutorials/softwares available to transfer/convert your BN purchases to Kindle.

Do you just want an e-reader or a tablet that can be used like a computer? I've had Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 for a couple of years, maybe longer, it does most everything a desktop can do. I download books from Amazon and would think it will support other readers. Checked and found a Barnes and Noble Nook app in the app store.

Here's some additional info:

I have a MacBook Air and I don't really want anything other than an e-reader. So something cheap that lets me access the books I've already paid for and get new ones. I already have the Nook app on my phone. I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a tablet. Something like an inexpensive Kindle that would allow me to download the Nook app (assuming that's possible) or BN e-reader (Nook). Edited to add: It seems like I would need a Fire to run apps (i.e., Nook app). I'm hesitant to go for something refurbished, though I see one person above apparently has had a positive experience.

Because of the limitations. They may let you download other ebook apps now, but I’d check first. B&N has become kind of marginal in the ebook business and they always seem to be on the verge of shutting down. My sister reads mostly through nook and switched to a low end Samsung. The nook hardware is probably ok quality but locks you into the nook store.

We have a couple kindle fire hd 10s that I got on sale at about half normal list for using on exercise equipment. They’re not great as tablets go, but they’re ok and very cheap at day after xmas prices. I had to set them up with the google play store to side load, but can run any regular android app on them, including the nook app. But it does take a little effort to set that up.

As noted by others- Apple and Samsung really are the most reliable tablets, and you can sometimes find Samsung A series at prices competitive with nook or kindle fire.

I was actually recommending the e-ink Kindles, not the Fire. There is software that will convert your BN ebooks to be transferred to your Kindle via computer and USB cable.

They still sold Nook Glowlights as of a few months ago when I needed to replace mine. But I went with a Kindle Oasis because the Glowlight 4 didn't have a water rating.

I love my oasis, it's eInk and easy to read in all lights, multicolor backlight so you can have it cool or warm depending on preference, pages render fast, and it's just everything I wanted in a Nook but couldn't get anymore.

if you want color, any tablet will do. I have the Nook App on my iPhone, and it'll work on pretty much any decent tablet you wish.

So, I'm confused, the Kindle Oasis everything you wanted in the Nook but the Nook app will not run on it?

sorry, no. There are ways, I believe, to get the books from the Nook store and convert them and side load them. I haven't looked too deeply into that.

What I was saying is that for now I do have the nook app on my phone. I wanted an actual reader because e-ink is easier on my eyes for long term reading, which is why I didn't just buy a tablet and use the app.

my plan is to eventually figure out how to get my books from the Nook store and transfer them over. And hope it's possible like I've been told.

for now my Oasis has stuff I've bought from Amazon and and a bunch of epub books I've gotten elsewhere (like the Baen Free Library) and side loaded onto it.
