Is this overkill?
I am someone who remembers installing 64K bit chips.
So is this overkill (C$15 per 16GB stick)? https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ca2251afd5.png https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4a3345f31c.png |
First, what kind of memory are you getting at C$15 for 16GB? Decent DDR4 sticks are typically US$50-75 and up.
Very much depends on what you're doing with the machine. Email and web browsing? Yes, probably. Video rendering, CAD, etc. Maybe not, though 64GB likely would be enough. Or if it's actually a server, as indicated by the CPU, then it could be woefully inadequate, based on the use. But if you can get 16GB sticks of DDR4 RAM for C$15, then you might as well. Running a CPU that was released in 2012, on the other hand - not overkill. |
You need that if you are running virtual machines in Windows. All our work's tech laptops have 64GB to 128GB.

It's a fairly old computer. Xeon E5-1620 CPU. and uses DDR3 RDIMMs hence the cheap memory (8500 speed while the computer came with 4x4GB 12800).
