Oh back on topic, I use Zoom in the US.

Often I wonder if I can use it between China and US?

Zoom seems to work with China, even in quarantine centers, although I believe the person is using a VPN.

Zoom works in SZ GZ almost all the time. SH is about 75%. This is without VPN
That is my actual experience with online meetings, training, and coaching.

I didn't see it mentioned in the article based on this thread, but one of the best things people can do is purchase a good headset. Bluetooth earpieces are ok, but a true conferencing headset makes an incredible difference for both you and others. I highly recommend the Plantronics Savi 7xx series. The range is excellent, they come with a kit for fitting it to your head, and the features/capabilities are unmatched imo. Bonus, get the charging cradle upgrade that includes a 2nd battery so you can hot-swap while on calls.

I'm only on a few calls per day and added a wired V-Moda BoomMic to my Sony WH-1000XM3 over ear headphones. I've got one of the units with iffy mic and voice barely picks up via bluetooth on Zoom. Participants say that my voice is very clear with BooMic and it sounds like I'm standing next to them. The inline mute doesn't seem to work with Zoom but everything works even without the headset powered on in ANC modes. I have other wired and bluetooth in-ear with mic but they tend to fall out of my ears when talking.

$30 https://www.v-moda.com/us/en/product...pro-microphone

(Though I do wish I had brought my Sennheiser conferencing headset home from work or didn't lose my Bose QC 20's)

I picked up some of these over the weekend at a discount and they work extremely well in my home office. Having had a pair for several months now their multi-mic array is some of the best in headphone mic‘ING I’ve used. Most people say they can’t tell I’m not on a landline. I moved away from Bose cans for travel many years ago (I do still have my QC1’s from 1995?) but for home office and in coffee shops, they really do work as advertised to isolate my voice from sound around me. I had hoped they would come down to $299 so I could get another pair for my wife, but the quick deal was too much to pass up.

I wouldn't touch Zoom at the very least until they have end to end encryption (with a more reasonable encryption). For now, it's hardly more secure than having a conversation in a bar.

Well, it’s certainly better than a conversation in a bar. While it’s not E2E encrypted just between parties (The content does run over zooms infrastructure), at a minimum the video contact and computer audio content is encrypted at least as well as any https web browsing session would be. (Like your bank or favorite airline website) It’s not E2E with both party endpoints being the only ones that can encrypted, share and decrypt the content - like say Apple iMessage, but this content is not out in the open for anyone to eavesdrop on or snoop on like an open WiFi session. And even IF captured people aren’t going to be able to de-crypt it quickly or easily.

Routing audio over the regular phone system does become more problematic, but that is true of any phone call that isn’t truly encrypted E2E and trunks out of in over the regular POTS network at any stage.

The hijacking of zoom meetings is really a combination of both user error, bad communication from the company and bad default settings enablement. With a couple of settings enabled, there’s no chance really of anyone hijacking a meeting.

Absolutely. Zoom have some serious security issues and I would avoid it like the plague.

We use Zoom all the time because it's easy to use and works. What we talk about in those meetings isn't something that is really very sensitive.

Agreed, if you've got the Chinese government after you (for example) then you presumably have bigger problems to deal with beyond what videoconference system you use.

MSPeconomist Apr 13, 2020 11:53 am

Some employers and mandating the use of zoom while employees work from home.

I am able to zoom with cleints and potential clients in China. We act like "the wall's got ears"

And other employers (i.e. those who are serious about IP) are outlawing it. So there's that.

I just had to install it (and multiplayer online bridge software) on my mum's iPad so she can remotely play bridge. We had a laugh at somebody spying on that. I've used it during lockdown to watch a webinar or two that somebody at a supplier was running. Again it wasn't anything secret and there wasn't any user participation via webcam. In fact the majority of the messages sent were wishing people Happy Easter, Stay Safe etc.
