Hate the new gmail format
Well, just like they did with Google Maps a few years ago, Gmail's interface has changed to something that conveys far less information and is far more annoying.
And the option on my settings/gear icon no longer has the "switch back to classic" view. Sigh. |
It took a bit of getting used to but it seems okay to me now. The biggest thing I had trouble with was the placement of the buttons that appear when you have a message open; I was clicking on the wrong ones for a while.
One positive thing about the move: it seems to have some sort of autocomplete support while typing messages now. |
Regardless of the interface GMAIL uses, I've forwarded all my personal gmail e-mails to my secondary e-mail at outlook.com. It's a much better interface IMHO.
At work, we use G Suite for Business and most staff almost never use the Gmail interface. Almost everybody uses Outlook as their mail client. We hate gmail so much that we are switching to Office 365 e-mail. Now I can finally accept meeting invitations within the Outlook mail client (which is designed to work with Office 365/Exchange in the first place) and have it update my calendar! |
Now that I am an old fart I hate change :)
I had my multiple inboxes setup exactly how I wanted them and now they don't work properly. Excuse me -- something important I have to go do -- "Hey you kid, get off of my lawn!" :) |
Hate the new Gmail
I think you can reverse it by going to settings and clicking on restore the old format. I did it on both my gmail accounts as well as my daughter's. It was the first time in her adult life that I knew more than she did about computers. I felt chuffed!
|
I am told the reverse method you describe only works for so many days after the implementation. According to my friend (who raised this with me today) this is what they were doing and the option has now gone away resulting in them being stuck with the new format.
I checked their settings and there is no "restore old format". An online search shows that by October the revert to previous will be gone for everyone - so enjoy it whilst you can! |
Damn. I ate the new format too

The format is fine. But, it seems slow to me. I delete an email and the thing can take 3 to 20 seconds to refresh the screen.
|
I very much like the fact that you can now pin the calendar pane to the right side. I was using the Outlook plugin previously but that is seriously f'ed.

I won't even start on all the ways that I despise Outlook's behavior (at least still with the new gmail, I can still see the actual email address instead of having Outlook strip that out so many times so that one can't copy and paste it).

The ones I receive from within the organization don't show the email address, just the name. And the same is true for many outside the organization.
|
Agreed, I think the new Gmail is slower. Even worse is what they did to Google Flights. It's three clicks now to select a one-way instead of the one click before. Wonder why they made it more complicated.....only Google knows....and they know everything...
|
+1 on not liking the new gmail
|
+2 on not liking the new Gmail. Fortunately, I have only one email there for a specific job but need to leave it on the web instead of downloading to my computer.
|
What is this new Gmail format? Mine hasn't changed recently.

Based on their track record, Google has the worst product/user interface improvement team in the business. Did they hire the crack "New Coke" team?
|
Don't like it as well. Too slow.
|
Way too slow. I wish they hadn't removed the option to revert to classic Gmail. The new version is awful.
|
Where exactly is this slowness people are complaining about? When you go to gmail.com, you wait a few seconds for it to load. It always did that. Then it behaves as always. What's slow?
I think people just want to complain about change. |
It is probably the same speed of loading. But before you get the old URL (whichever site you were on) to stare at while it was loading. Now you get to stare at the animation of the Gmail while it loads. I wonder if they do this in preparation of putting in ads for you to watch while it loads. Instead of the Gmail envelope, it would be a picture of Starbucks coffee filling up... "Start your morning with a fresh cup of Pumpkin Spiced Starbucks Coffee. Click the Icon for $1 Coupon!"

Eleven seconds to load the new and improved [sic] gmail.

I'm also having issues with gmail not logging me in. I click next after entering my password (which auto-populates on my laptop) and instead of loading the emails, it redirects back to the main log in page. It's happening frequently and is very annoying. |
The "new" format really isn't much different than the old format IMO. Both work fine for me, but I do like the improvements in the "new" format.

One thing I've noticed that's much slower is deleting an email. I have a specific gmail account I use for anything mailing-list related and sometimes there will be multiple emails in the in box that I know I can delete without reading. I click to select them, then on the trash button. And then I wait. It's probably only five seconds (sometimes it's longer) for an action that used to be immediate. Same with moving an email to a folder, it just takes longer than it used to.

In the old version, when I hovered over an email address, the pop-up box had a link to search for all the emails which I received from that address. I have yet to find that functionality in the new Gmail. Now, I have to copy the email address and paste it in the "Search Mail" box when looking for other emails which I received from that address. |

There is one feature that I regularly used in the previous version of Gmail which is missing from the new one.

Not really a big deal as I was already switching away from gmail. The new interface isn't terrible but it's probably a good time to permanently move.

You can check the checkbox for that email, click on the three vertical dots on the toolbar below the search field, and choose Filter messages like these. From that point you can either create a filter rule or just execute a simple search.

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...96ba8fcaee.jpg I have two different gmail accounts opened in two different tabs. Both are set at "compact" display but one is way more compact than the other. No idea how to get the first one to look like the second. |

Utterly unintuitive, huh? I continue to not understand why there was such a "need" for an "up"grade. Sigh. |
Mine switched over this morning w/o the " switch back to classic" tab. I think I am stuck with the new. What I don't like about it is that the new not only looks heavier and brighter but it looks cartoonish. The classic was more svelte and ....well... classic.
|
We just switch from G Suite to Office 365 today and not looking back!
|
I am no fan of the new Gmail, but now I am semi comfortable with it. I really wish Google would invest a little effort Calendar UI, search in particular is quite old school.

I hate the new Gmail interface b/c it doesn't offer enough contrast. They rolled out what they call a 'high contrast' option, but that does not fix the issue for me unfortunately.
