iPhone 7

Anyone here thinking of getting the iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus which might be called iPhone 7 Pro? I certainly wont because I have a 6S Plus with 64GB so I'm good to go for another 2 or 3 years.

I am as I still have an iPhone 5 with 32gb and a face that is peeling off. The 6S was not compelling at all to me, so I am waiting for the announcement to see if a cheaper 6S or a full price 7 is the better bet.

I'm not. I usually upgrade on the S product launch, but the lack of headphone jack on the new iPhones is a deal killer for me. It's DRM for headphones, and it pisses me off. I have some very nice Grado headphones I like using and don't want to carry an additional adapter to use headphones.

maortega15 Sep 7, 2016 1:24 pm

While tempting, I usually upgrade after 3 generations. My previous phone prior to my current 6 was the 4s.

Speaking of the S, i'm not sure if there will be an S next year or a complete overhaul that everyone seems to be talking about.

I already have to carry a micro USB to lightning adapter so I could charge the iPhone from my external battery. Everything is in micro USB and iPhone has to be in lightning, okay fine. Now headphones too? What am I going to do with my Shure and Boss headphones?

But on the good side, I think this will raise the raise the resell value of my 6S LOL. :p

gobluetwo Sep 7, 2016 1:45 pm

Carry around various 2.5mm-to-lightning, 3.5mm-to-lightning, and bluetooth adapters?

Already on the apple website and listed at $9.

Mine is currently 4S. I'm getting the 6s, It's $200 off on apple.com now. The lack of headphone jack is a deal killer for me. I don't mind using the adapter. However, I will need to charge and be able to listen at the same time.

Why do you need micro USB to lightning adapter? Why can't you just use the lightning USB cable to charge your phone from your external battery?

nmenaker Sep 7, 2016 2:21 pm

I'll probably pickup a 7, not the 7 pro. Having OIS in the regular 7 would be enough for me and I don't really need the dual lens stuff.

CPRich Sep 7, 2016 2:25 pm

My family will be waiting for the next cycle.

We typically upgrade every 2 years - in the past there were meaningful "major" upgrades every 2 cycles. This seems to be more of minor upgrade and I wouldn't be surprised if next year's 10th anniversary is an 8 rather than a 7s, a major upgrade that we might go with.

Deleting the headphone jack just annoys me. Hopefully within a year there will be $10 lightning headphones to replace the $10 headphones I buy by the handful as my kids lose/break them.

Mary2e Sep 7, 2016 2:25 pm

I purchased a 5S 2 years ago last June and was waiting to upgrade for the release of the 7. I'm wondering if it's really worth it for my needs. I almost never use headphones, so that's not a deal maker or breaker for me.

Perhaps I'll wait for the 6S to get cheaper and get that one.

I'm sure there will be adapters that can do that. The HDMI out can do that already.

Internaut Sep 7, 2016 3:41 pm

Hmmm.... Might be buying a 6 plus or 6S plus from the eBay dealer who sold me my last two iPhones (a 5c, and my current iPhone, the 6).

As for the 7... It's quite nice. The Plus in particular is hardly revolutionary but looks more than just an incremental upgrade. I'm happy to stay a generation or two behind. I'm sanguine about the headphone jack, BTW, but think they should have moved the lightening port of the top of the phone.

anrkitec Sep 7, 2016 5:02 pm

No more Space Gray/Black - sucks. :td:

$1000 for an iPhone - ridiculous. Is Apple anticipating lower volume so they are trying to make it up on margin?

And the new 7 still doesn't have a full HD screen. :td:

apple has always charged a premium for storage... not sure why you're complaining now

(at least they bumped up to 32/128/256 now, versus 16/64/128)

There is a "Black" color that looks pretty close to space gray.

Prices will drop on the 7 by xmas.

LAXlocal Sep 7, 2016 9:03 pm

I am not the fan boy who will go for anything Apple says is my future ,

but it will be interesting to see if the no headphone jack will hurt sales ,

If it was a cheap $50 phone and no headphone jack I would pass , and find another phone that had one , will 6 months from now will both be available ?

and will the next iPad have the headphone jack or not ,

only time will tell.....

dinanm3atl Sep 7, 2016 9:13 pm

Headphone jack is a gamble but one that Apple knows they will win. They know it's a gamble as they include an adapter in the box. Apple didn't even include an aperture when 30pin went to lightning. Samsung was able to get the water resistant rating and keep the jack. I think they are pushing this as 'innovation' but really just got beat.

As someone who loves music it's crap. The Apple earbuds feel like crap in your ear and sound like doodoo. Now it's wireless for 159 dollars or lightning connection.

I'm on an iPhone forever plan so I'll get one but more upset that in my car I have a charger and aux and now can only one 1 or the other. Kind of lame.

WIRunner Sep 7, 2016 10:19 pm

I was really hoping that the headset rumour was just that. Unless I'm on a plane listening to music (or maybe thats when I really would need it) I've got it plugged in charging and listening to music at the same time. Might hang on to the SE a while longer, the 6s was too slippery for me. I'm too entrenched in the Apple Ecosystem to go back to Android full time.

We'll see what happens next year. (Though that piano black one sure is pretty, but I always use a case.)

Here's an interesting workaround. Not sure what the battery life would be, and it's a pain to have yet another thing to charge.

Unimatrix One Sep 7, 2016 11:15 pm

Really glad I'm an Android user. At least if Android phones drop the headphone jack, you can be reasonably certain the replacement will be non proprietary and available from lots of different providers (like micro USB vs Lightning), and for reasonable prices. With Apple there's always the risk you'll get screwed.

jeebus Sep 7, 2016 11:29 pm

Having broken a couple of earbud plugs on plane jacks, I've switched to bluetooth earbuds. While I agree Apple's move screws its customers (what else is new), I won't miss the loss of the jack.

Just something else to lose or break.

tmiw Sep 8, 2016 1:36 am

The headphone jack going away kinda sucks for the people who use Square. Then again, they also have a Bluetooth version now for the new credit cards.

Personally, I don't really use the headphone jack all that much. My music listening is basically Bluetooth streaming in the car anyway, or probably CarPlay if I ever end up buying a new car. But we'll see how this works out for Apple.

miamiflyer8 Sep 8, 2016 1:39 am

I'm very very VERY tempted to get the 7 Plus even as a 6S Plus user but I think I'll wait for the next generation.

As far as the Apple watch goes, any of you Apple Watch users planning on upgrading to the 2nd edition? I don't have an Apple Watch but likely buying one, is it worth spending the extra $100 for the newer one or?

Weirdly, the 1st edition is going to get the same CPU that's in the 2nd edition, so it might not be worthwhile to spend the extra money unless you need the water resistance or GPS. As for me, I'll probably have to play with them in the store first to see if there's that much of a performance improvement with either compared to mine.

I do not really need the water resistance so I guess I'll opt for the first gen.

lathiat Sep 8, 2016 3:23 am

I'm not going to upgrade my watch for now, unless I start feeling that it's running slow but given it's pretty good at the moment probably I'll be OK. I mainly use it for notifications so don't really need snazzier apps for now. If I bought a new one now I'd go waterproof but not worth upgrading for for my use case, same for the GPS part.

As for the 7plus, like every single year since the 3G I'll be getting a new one.. :-)

The "no headphone jack" is the reason I won't change phones and get this latest one.

That black color is pretty sleek. Better than the new glossy black IMHO.

I actually prefer the jet black. But everyone is different whether they like glossy finishes or not.

I just got my first pair of Bluetooth earbuds last month, and they are great. I now only used wired earbuds in the car while on a phone call (or if the wireless earbuds are charging).

The lack of a headphone jack is making me think about buying a 6 or 6s now. It's not practical to have to choose between using headphone or charging the phone.

BTW, can you use Bluetooth and the ear things throughout a flight? I'm asking since Bluetooth seems to be transmitting and I would think it could be forbidden, especially on some airlines. Does airplane mode disable Bluetooth? Sorry for the stupid question.

Curious - why?

dinanm3atl Sep 8, 2016 9:53 am

Have Gen One watch. Nothing except 'water resistance' is a true and real upgrade IMO. No reason to upgrade unless you really plan to swim with your watch.

I'm sure I read both the earbuds and the adapter come with a through connector.

The AirPods are not "Bluetooth".
