I think 5 or 6 of them have burst into flames while on charge.

Meh. This happens with every device.

No I am not worried. Anyway I charge mine on a regular old slow-charging Qi wireless charger.

I checked through a number of news feeds and can find stories for only 2 that have "exploded." At least one of them was using a 3rd party charger with a Micro-USB to USB-C adapter.

So I'm a lot less worried now than before. Also, I'm not fast-charging, which I've read is harder on the battery.

Yes, I also use it very sparingly.

I've never been a fan of quick-charging on a regular basis, FWIW. It seems to put the battery under unnecessary stress. On my Nexus 6 I only used the included Quick-Charge plug on the rare occasions when I really needed juice fast. Otherwise just like my Note 7, it was charged on a Qi wireless charger. After two years the battery isn't noticeably depleted.

Hadn't heard about the explosions until just now. Have to say I'm a bit concerned, although I haven't noticed any issues with heat while charging mine.

You're in the US? You guys get the Snapdragon 820 variant, I think the ones that have the 'exploding' issue are Exynos variants. Don't know for sure though

This I've read as well. But why are some devices more sensitive to 3rd party accessories than others?

I'm sure those 5 people aren't the only ones who use cheap microUSB to USB-C adapters/cables.
I know a guy on another forum who uses all sorts of weird crap USB-C adapters and cables for his Nexus 5X, his phone hasn't exploded yet. And I can safely say he uses the kinda stuff that sells for around 2-3 USD.

After 8 months, my Nexus 6 was still perfectly fine regardless of being charged twice a day with a fast charger. That thing still managed to impress me in terms of battery life considering the huge display.
Can't say the same for my Nexus 6P though, which I've only had for about 2 months.

I'm a happy user of the OnePlus 3. I bought the 3 and a Galaxy 7 at the same time to compare, kept the 3 and gave the 7 to my son. I love the Dash Charging - haven't had any problems/heating/explosions, etc :)

I hate bad cables, but it's not just that.

Galaxy Note 7 recall is on the table following battery explosions

joshwex90 Sep 2, 2016 1:35 am

Not so sure about that. Samsung has specifically pulled releases in a number of countries. Don't recall hearing about such drastic measures with others phones

Dodge DeBoulet Sep 2, 2016 3:18 am

It's official, Worldwide recall of Samsung Note 7 announced.

Damn. I love this phone ... Hope the replacement process is relatively painless.

SRQ Guy Sep 2, 2016 5:15 am

Looks like we'll get new ones. I wouldn't sweat it too much.

It's actually a good response from Samsung. I had heard rumors of having to send the phone back for battery replacement, which would have been a PITA.

XT1580 is the Single SIM variant, these are the supported bands:
Band 1 (2100), Band 2 (1900), Band 3 (1800), Band 4 (AWS), Band 5 (CLR 850), Band 7 (2600), Band 8 (900), Band 12 (700), Band 17 (700), Band 20 (800) and Band 28 (700).

XT1581 is the Dual SIM variant, and these are the supported LTE bands on that:

Band 1 (2100), Band 3 (1800), Band 7 (2600), Band 17 (700), Band 20 (800).

-------

So it seems the Dual SIM one is missing some essential bands to use LTE in the US and Canada. Though will work fine in Europe. It looks as though it's been designed for use in Asia and China since it also supports a ton of TD-LTE/TD-SCDMA bands which are only used by Sprint in the US and no other major network.

There seems to be some confusion though.

Apparently all X Forces sold in Mexico are dual-SIM and they claim to be XT1580s, see for example http://www.bestbuy.com.mx/motorola-m...rce-negro.html And that kind of makes sense -- surely phones sold in Mexico support US cell phone bands?

Is there a way to check what bands a physical phone in your hand actually supports? Are there any Android apps that can verify the information by querying the radio directly?

Not quite worldwide, the story I heard on NPR this morning said that those in China were ok, as the battery had a different manufacturer.

http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-w...ning-batteries

One country isn't included in the recall — China. The AP reports that, according to Samsung, the Galaxy Note 7s sold in China used a different battery that wasn't affected by the flaw.

Is the battery sealed or removable?
