Evernote alternatives?
 

Hi all...I'm looking for an alternative to Evernote. Now that they've limited device access for those on the free plan, it's sort of gutting the point of it for me. I'd actually pay, but the new pricing is too high for my limited uses.

Here's what I'm looking for: something with basic note-taking functionality that I can access on Android and Apple devices plus web access. I'd also like to be able to take photos of things to create new notes.

Have you tried onenote? It's not as good as evernote, but for my occasional needs, it's fine.

Google Keep is available for Android and iOS, and is accessible via web browser. Notes are shareable.

I personally think OneNote is better than Evernote, and it meets all the requirements you listed.

Do you really need to move away - you will always have browser access on multiple devices?

Keep the 2 devices for where you really to have data offline and/or you need some of the editing capabilities of the app.

This, and it's completely free.

Note that if you're running Windows 10, it comes with a cut-down version of OneNote. Just ignore that one, and download the real (still free) version.

I've found that Google keep is pretty good. If you own a mac, Notes is actually not terrible, either.

The only reason I keep Evernote is that it has the great web clippers. Otherwise I think it's a rubbish app. They work on stupid nonsensical things such as chat, and they don't sync well across devices which is MUCH more important.

Just found MS have an importer from Evernote to Onenote. Adios Evernote, it was sort of fun, if buggy, and I never could get reliable pining of the icon to the taskbar. You just screwed the pooch with the new device policy. The final nail is MS now have OneNote for the iPhone. My import is underway. Did I mention I get Onenote for FREE?

I installed Google Keep sometime ago to check it out but never got on to it, so all I can say is that the icon looks nice.

It's sad to see so many running from Evernote as they have started to charge for a service. How long before M$, not the most philanthropic of operations, start to charge for Onenote once they have a substantial user base?

Server space, developers, network capacity and support do not come for free - funding must come from somewhere.

Of course, if your usage falls right in the cracks where it's not worth it to you to pay for a subscription but the 2 free device limit hits you, it makes sense to at least explore alternatives. However, I understand the 2 device limit applies to devices where you are running the native app. I think there is no limitation on the number of devices on which you access your evernote data via the web app. Just in case this would provide a solution for you (and pls check, just remember seeing this somewhere - I'm a happy Premium subscriber so didn't follow up).

One neat thing about Onenote is that you can put your note anywhere on the page, much more like how you can with a physical piece of paper. Makes it easier to put notes in physical groups, like brainstorming things in different categories.

Evernote is always one long column of note taking.
