I haven't jailbroken my phones for a few years now as it seemed that apple added much of the functionality I used to jailbreak to get. What do those who jailbreak see as the most significant benefits these days?

From the iOS 9 thread:

For jailbreakers, what are your main couple of apps/tweaks that still make you want to jailbreak? It's been years since I did that, and wondering if there was anything new/compelling to consider again.

I liked BiteSMS, SBSettings, 3G Unrestrictor (off the top of my head). While I know you can still customise things just the way you want with jailbreaking, I'm happy with most of what iOS 8/9 have provided built-in.

I do wish we could use things like Signal (or Cellmapper, etc) on native iOS though.

This app alone

is worth jailbreaking for.

PdaNet for those occasions where there is no wifi (have used since my Treo days. A lifesaver when you need it)
CallBlocker
Clever Pin (remembers wifi passwords so don't have to re-logon to known networks)
Facebook ++ Allows the use of FB's in-app messaging
iCaughtU
iCleaner (wonderful tool for cleaning the debris that accumulates)
Revelation (lets me see my passwords instead of ***)
TypeStatus
WiCarrier

and just because

Just an fyi, the "semi-jailbreak" (installing Cydia only via stealth) methods detailed here

i0nc:http://i0n1c.com/jailbreak-ios-9.0.2/
pangu9:http://pangu9.mobi/
ih8sn0w:http://www.ih8sn0w.mobi/

didn't work for me.

Does this look for-real?

From the comments it does appear to work after some attempts. But ask yourself whether you really want some unknown Chinese Jailbreak app getting root access on your phone.

I think that those doing this using third party tools need to ask themselves whether the rewards are really worth the risks.

Pangu has a decent track record but as is always the case, YMMV. I'd wait to see what the community says before jb. POV

I would stand back with my 5S & wait too, especially now that the d/l site is under nasty DOS

Meanwhile, on the Androids front, busy with MM 6.0 - running debloated & lean stock Rom, rooted with tweaks ... battery life improved & happy, keeping me busy & leaving Mrs L's iPad Mini alone too.

Fair point, but Pangu has a pretty solid reputation in past jailbreaks.

Is their an alternative to "third party tools" for jailbreaking?

Again, fair point about risk, but I find it hard to want to imagine using my iPhone without a few of the essential (to me) Cydia apps.

I tend to wait until I see it on iClarified.com Do you have a different source for determining community credibility?

I must have grabbed it this morning before that attack started.

Yes, Android devices that let you root with some commands instead of untrusted files, but that isn't the right advise for an iPhone thread.

Again - it is entirely up to you, you clearly feel those apps outweigh the risks that could be involved here.
