Power Plug Adapter?
 

I have an upcoming trip to SE Asia and I am looking for a power plug adapter to use while I am away. I was hoping to find a universal adapter that will work all over the world, so I am not buying separate plugs adapters for different trips.

It looks great, but it would be nice to be able to plug a laptop charger in AND have 1 or 2 USB ports (so I can charge a cell phone and/or camera at the same time). Kensington makes something, but it only accepts two prong US plugs (non-grounded), but does have two USB ports.


Does anyone have any recommendations for a universal adapter that has a three prong plug input and a couple of USB ports (preferably that supports quick charge technology)? I could always use the OREI adapter and use the USB ports in my computer to charge a device, but those are typically very slow to charge.

I don't have any direct recommendations for you, as I personally steer away from the complicated multi-devices. It only takes once for that complicated (and actually really cool) gadget to break, and for you to end up really ticked off. Instead, I recommend individual adapters which are cheaper and smaller, paired with a nice Anker USB charger. I have boxes of different adapters in a storage tub in my closet along with mini tubes of toothpaste and stuff. I know it's not the answer you were looking for, but hopefully gives you something to consider before purchase.

I've been using this Belkin Travel Adapter for over two years now. 2x USB Ports (no quickcharge, unfortunately) and 2x 3 prong plugs. Check if Belkin makes a similar version for USofA.

Closest I found is this but doesn't have interchangeable wall-prongs.

Tumi offers one, although it doesn't include a USB port. But it sure is stylish and compact and comes with a nice case. It goes with us always.

Also, in a pinch, I can easily plug my cell phone to my laptop to charge. I have 2 USB ports, so I could charge up to 2 devices on my plugged-in laptop.

I would avoid buying/using that kind of bulky devices. It usually put a lot of strain to the plug itself and therefore easily disconnects/breaks.

It's much better to use something along even though this specific one might not be fit for Asian plugs.

I would also recommend you look at this thread where you'll find a lot of great info/reviews.

Just get a small adaptor or two, and an extension cord. Viola, several outlets and the ability to place them conveniently away from the wall plug.

I concur with the recommendation to just get a universal travel adapter (like this Kikkerland) and pair it with an extension cord or even better, an Anker 5-port USB charger with the long cord.

That one doesn't appear at first glance to have all those sliding parts that snap off and break either, right? That actually looks like a really nice adapter.

It IS really nice (very compact) - I picked it up after reading about it in one of the threads on this forum, came pretty highly recommended by many here.

The only thing I'll add is avoid those huge universal adapters. They break easily, are big and due to their size they quite often don't physically fit in the socket (think of a socket in a floor plate for instance). Everytime I see one of those universal adapters, it is being used by a travel newbie! I just take the adapter for the place I am visiting (UK, Mainland Europe, China etc.). But I have a bag of small adapters for all parts of the world that I have amassed over the years. I'd also pack a US 2 to 3 pin converter if your laptop has a grounded 3-pin plug.

Thanks for all of the recommendations. After reading some old threads, it sounds like the Kikkerland is the best option. I didn't give a lot of thought to the large adapters being difficult to plug into some outlets.

I do have two USB ports on my computer, but I have always found them very slow to charge devices. I will just have to bring a separate wall charger for my cell phone / camera and can always use the laptop of my battery backup in a pinch.

Beter yet, chop of the US plug on the extension cord and get a local plug at a hardware store where you are.

The expensive adapters for one device typically pieces of junk. I've had a few of them short out due to poor connections between the US plug and the adapter. They are also typically not grounded and pull out of the wall jack easily.
