Two additional points:
-Be sure to also get a data only sim when you order as you can pop it into a tablet, other phone or other data device and use the data service for yourself to also have access to some services such as Uber, Maps, email....
-Does the Pixel, via Verizon, come unlocked?

All Verizon LTE devices are unlocked. (Aside from a few prepaid "box" phones.) Also, all Pixel phones are unlocked.

I thought Verizon phones blocked domestic sims.

I figured that was for Pixels sold by stores and the Google Play Store but wasn't sure about the Verizon sold units.

Indeed there are no fees to stop the service, and you actually will get a credit back for unused service during that month up to about $20. But, stopping can only be done for a maximum of three months at a time, and there might be a restriction to doing that once within every 12 months. The t&c’s are not too clear on that point.

And if it is your google voice number that is being used it can’t be used anywhere else while on pause.

Interesting point about the GV#.
I am in month 4 of suspended service. I got an email about the 3 month suspension ending and logged back in and suspended it again. I did not get charged and then credited either. In 3 weeks I will reactivate for 2 months for travels.

Verizon phones are pretty much all unlocked. We don't use Google Voice so we'd get a new GV number for the Pixel.

However, after poking around some more, FT helped me find what I'd spent hours trying to find with Google searches: a reasonably priced data SIM card that can be installed while at home and works in many countries. That would be FlexiRoam. For $36 including shipping, you get a sticker that goes on your SIM card so that you can switch back and forth from your carrier to Flexiroam at will. The price includes 1 GB of data (about what I'll need) that is valid for 90 days, and when I travel again, I use the same sticker and just buy another $30 1GB plan (so in that sense it's easier than swapping SIM cards). So far people seem to be happy with Flexiroam, and it would cost roughly the same as Fi without all the cancel or suspend hassle.

Today, Woot.com is having 32GB Pixel phones for sale at $399-$449. It's a one day deal site but not a bad deal if someone needs or wants the Pixel.

That would be correct for some phones. My Verizon Motorola Droid HD Maxx refuses to take a T-Mobile SIM card. On the flip side, I have an older Verizon S3 which works quite happily on T-Mobile, so at least some of their devices are, some aren't.

Dailysteals has the Nexus 6 for $220, for anyone looking for a cheap fully Fi-capable device.

Project Fi
Stockholm- great
Talinn- great
St. Petersburg- great
Helsinki- Great
Copenhagen- Crappy- i did a chat with the Fi folks. He suggested the codes i will post below. The T MO code (smaller of 2) worked downtown for a while then died.

Iceland- Fantastic- best service of any country outside US

*#*#34866#*#* finds t mo signal

*#*#347626#*#* finds all signals

A shortcut/convenience app for these codes:

Back when I switched to Fi, a co-worker pointed me at Signal Spy: https://www.signalspy.com/

In that app is a button for Launch Dialer Codes that lets you choose a carrier and loads the appropriate code into the clipboard. Then it switches you to the phone app and you just have to paste it into the dialer directly.

I've been to a variety of countries in Europe and Asia and Australia with my pixel and Fi. It's "great" in every single one, including Denmark. The key is that you must pick the right service when connecting. Of course the phone doesn't tell you which one is the best. I usually choose the largest provider and work my way down from there if I can't connect or the largest isn't the best. But without a doubt one of the telco providers works in all countries they claim and when it does - it works quite well. As well as when you're in the States.

I travel internationally a few times a year. That's what's kept me back from Fi. I have a lot of US domestic travel, and I'm with Verizon and AT&T (on my iOS devices) and it's all domestic unlimited.

Verizon (on my phone) sucks on their $10/day international program, limited as it is to 500MB and also not that fast either.

But, it is easy and there is no additional monthly charge...

Long Train Runnin Aug 16, 2017 7:37 am

I guess I am starting to travel to the more edge case countries, but my last two international forays have been to Belize and the Maldives. Both places don't support Fi, but my SMS worked perfectly when connected to Wi-Fi. I think I have been to 5 of the unsupported countries now. However, I have been to dozens of supported ones, and I still think its the best choice for me. Although I was a little surprised that Belize didn't have service. I didn't even check ahead of time because it doesn't seem that "exotic" upon landing I got the bad news.
