Was in Alaska last week and looks like Project Fi needs to update their coverage maps. No data coverage in the Anchorage area but it picked up an AT&T signal in Willow, AK. Only time I had data during my entire trip. Spoke with the Google Support folks who mentioned this was a problem area for them and provided a 1GB credit to my account.

Project Fi shows 2G coverage but slow data is better than no data.

GPRS might as well be no data.

Size-wise, I still prefer my N5X - easier to carry on the belt pouch and/or slip into the pocket with the bumper case.

Last month, the N6 ran up a whopping $31 & change bill on "Fi" for using only 600 MB worth of 4G/LTE data - not bad, actually very nice - as she's typically on Wifi @home or during hotel stays, that's another savings every month over T-Mobile's $40 prepaid plan with unlimited calling/text & 2GB data.

Taking a week off to cruise NY to Bermuda next month and will see how things go on the ship (not expecting to get any service on her Fi line) and on the islands, as we usually buy a frugal 3 days WiFi/data pass while docked to have some connectivity.

You can get that bill down another $4 if you change your service address from NYC to something in Nevada. Mine is currently 3600 S Las Vegas Blvd. :-)

The $4 doesn't matter much but it's fun to play the game.

Thanks, that's Kosher ? :D - and you've maintained that 2nd. residence for a while now - Fi is okay with that. Cool, I might just do that & switch to 3801 S. LVB as it's our home away from home - c/o our Executive Host's suite # @ the Hilton, just in case.

FedEx just delivered the Fi data sim nano card last week, get it successfully activated it to play in Bermuda next month with the iPad Mini (not on the supported device list :) ) - I can live with paying an extra $10 for 1 GB of slower 3G data on the islands, as the 3 day WiFi pass @ Dockyard while we are at Heritage Wharf is priced at $15 with spotty coverage - if cellular coverage isn't good, we won't run up a bill & simply won't use it.

Just did a long weekend visit to Albuquerque / Santa Fe. Coverage was spotty at best in suburbs of each city and spent a tremendous amount of time in 3G.

Fi purports to offer free text messages internationally. Is this including SMS (raw text) only, or does it include MMS (pictures, group texts)?

T-Mobile sold their low band spectrum in Alaska to GCI and signed a reciprocal LTE roaming agreement with them so coverage in Alaska for native T-Mobile customers should be very good.

Obviously they don't allow Fi customers to roam on GCI :(

Two International Roaming reports
 

I recently took two international trips with my Nexus 6 using Project Fi, and my Nexus 9 tablet using a Project Fi data only SIM. I use the Signal Check app to see which systems it connects to.

Vancouver, B.C. Canada
Connected to Bell Mobility using LTE after about 10 minutes. Both of my devices worked well, albeit at the slower 256 kbps international roaming data speeds. The tablet shows a small "R" roaming indicator while the phone does not.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Connected to T-Mobile using LTE pretty quickly. Both of my devices worked well, albeit at the slower 256 kbps international roaming data speeds. I don't recall if I saw the roaming indicator on my tablet or not.

In the past I was on T-Mobile's international roaming on my trips and while I think I can notice the faster Fi speed, the tradeoff is that the Fi data is still metered and charged. I found myself holding off on photo uploads until I had a WiFi connection to hold down my costs. I'm pretty pleased with how it worked other than the initial delay finding service in Vancouver.

Montego Bay and Negril, Jamaica
Connected to Digicel pretty quickly after landing and had coverage all along the road to Negril. My connections were usually HSPA or HSPA+ with the occasional GSM. I found the data to be pretty slow, similar to when I roamed here with T-Mobile in March 2015.

How is Fi any different from roaming with T-Mobile in this case?
