I'd be curious if anyone with an older MacBook, model late 2008 aluminum will be upgrading?

robroy90 Oct 17, 2014 1:25 pm

I have not loaded it on my older Macs yet, but it runs exceedingly well on my late 2013 retina. The speed is borderline criminal, especially how fast it boots. It has a very clean, crisp look and I am very pleased so far. I have loaded almost all of my apps and haven't ran into a problem yet.

Keep me posted if you do take the plunge. I'm not in a hurry. Actually the only reason even considering it is I will be eventually upgrading from iOS 7.x to 8.x [waiting for jailbreak].

milepig Oct 17, 2014 2:55 pm

Right now it is taking forever to download, and I'm on lightning fast connection. It's been stuck at 28-31minutes remaining for over half an hour.

antichef Oct 17, 2014 3:01 pm

Am posting this from my aluminium mid-2009 MBP, it worked fine.

Did my MB Air earlier today and it went fine too, except for the iTunes 12 update to 12.0.1 which forever kept showing as an app for download. I downloaded it four times before I found the solution (google ;)) which was to go to the iTunes site and do a manual download.

All working well all round so far. Haven't done the iMac yet as it is in another country.

It took hours for each one as my download speed is about 5MBps!!

milepig Oct 17, 2014 5:26 pm

Proceed with caution. This trashed a bunch of things.

My access to the Outlook mailbox is all messed up - regaining access threw a bunch of errors that were spurious, but the bad problem is that the WIFI is now completely unreliable. It drops the access every few minutes and then when it comes back I need to go all the way back through the password entry to log back in.

Everything is very slow to respond.

How do I uninstall??

stimpy Oct 18, 2014 2:12 am

Yeah I'm seeing loads of problem reports on Macrumors, etc. I'm gonna wait for the bug fix release.

pricesquire Oct 18, 2014 7:52 am

I got it and I love it. Design upgrade is sleek (& much needed). I've experienced none of the buggy issues reported on Mac forums.

Really happy I updated!

Mrtrash757 Oct 18, 2014 10:35 am

My 2014 air is running fine. Actually faster in some things!

I have a few Pro's at the office I work at (2009/2011), and a 2011 air. The 2011 will takie the plunge first.

Ironic that i am typing this on a 2004 powerbook with a kernal panic... bahaha.

My whole computer is running faster. Just my .02 cents.

FWIW I'm running a 2014 MacBook Air.

How can you tell? My 2013 MB Air running Mavericks isn't slow in any tasks. I'm not sure how I would notice any increase in speed.

Lately Safari and Mail have been running annoyingly slow...as in, almost took it into the shop. Ditto basic Finder functions.

Upgrade noticeably fixed that.

langham123 Oct 18, 2014 12:41 pm

My 2014 runs slow on Mavericks so will wait for a while so Apple can iron out the bugs. Can't leave it too long or they'll make Mavericks redundant.

I have problems trying to run Dreamweaver on earlier Mac versions so need to keep XP going. Does anyone run Dreamweaver on their Mac?

robroy90 Oct 18, 2014 1:21 pm

For those of you experiencing problems, did you do an in-place upgrade or did you do a clean install? I will almost never upgrade over the top unless there are some extenuating circumstances. I have had zero problems, and only had to update a few of the utilities I use, such as NTFS for Mac, etc.

Went fine on my Son's 2011 17" MBP. I am with you on iOS. I am staying on 7 because I can't live without a jailbreak.

I think that's just a clean up of your settings that occurred during the upgrade. Safari and Finder run plenty fast for me without the upgrade.

Did an in-place upgrade on a 2009/10 Mac Pro desktop. Only problem I had was first startup couldn't find my "Home" folder. Disk permission repair fixed that.

I thought if you did a clean install you'd need to reinstall software. Is that the case?

yosithezet Oct 19, 2014 7:32 am

I upgraded a mid-2011 Mac Mini. I had trouble with the installer until I moved the installer from an external USB drive onto the Mac Mini's internal drive.

I also upgraded a mid-2012 Macbook Air and all is working smoothly.

I hate the new UI. Hate the ugly buttons in Chrome in FT's post submission form.

Yes, it would be as if it was taken new from the box. You would have to re-install your apps, but a minor inconvenience to me knowing that I brought zero cruft from prior installs forward. I like "Clean Slate" installs and do not mind the extra effort of re-install if it means I am likely to have less problems later.

HDQDD Oct 19, 2014 4:38 pm

I've been running all the different Public Betas. I've been quite happy with it on my mid-2014 MBP.

I'm now on PB 6, which for all practical purposes is the same as the general release.

I love the new UI. Perhaps you should try FF. The buttons are just fine (added benefit is that you're not sharing your entire browsing experience with google).

I had a bad lag in scrolling and some tasks, it seems to be better now.

I did the beta and it was terrible, happy it works now. Now i need to get Handoff all set...

How's that related to Yosemite? I thought you could always surf privately.

DeafFlyer Oct 20, 2014 9:01 am

I updated our 15 inch early 2011 MBP. No problems at all. I'm not yet decided if I like the new look. It kind of reminds me of an earlier version of Ubuntu from just looking at it. It works much better than Ubuntu ever did for me though.

?

(Obviously) it isn't, which is why I put it in my response to the poster's comments about issues with Chrome.

I have the late 2008 aluminum Macbook and upgraded to Yosemite. From a performance POV everything seems to be fine and in some cases a small improvement.

On a side note I would not be surprised if Yosemite is the final upgrade that our late 2008 models will be able to take. Apple is all about planned obsolescence in their new hardware (soldered RAM etc...) so a laptop more than six years old isn't going to be given the newest software forever.

My biggest problem with Yosemite is how many functional changes there are to Safari and iTunes which seem utterly pointless. I don't like the look nearly as much as Mavericks.

I do like iOS7 and iOS8 and their look but the desktop version of OS X didn't need to copy that look in my opinion.

I know it will only be a few days until i'm comfortable and worked out all the things that Apple have changed to allow my brain to relearn them. But I don't love the look of Yosemite.

Coathanger Oct 21, 2014 3:51 am

Upgraded my late 2013 rMBP 13" over the weekend and have been very happy with Yosemite. Performance has been equal, though not noticeably faster.

Personally like the new UI, though that's subjective. Hopefully there will be good support for the new sidebar in terms of useful widgets. Would love to have something like GC Map or the Flying Fish Mileage Calculator when planning trips.

TaipeiWang Oct 21, 2014 4:44 am

installed on Late 2008 unibody macbook, installation took quite long, about 45 minutes. Runs ok. In Excel for Mac the + Button on the top left isn't working anymore, it just does nothing. That's the only issue I found so far

From my perspective, a laptop from 2008 is decidedly elderly. My experience is that they last 4-5 years tops, and the IT folk at work say they expect to replace them every 3-4 years. They just take a lot of abuse. I have one that's also in the 2008 range, but it really just sits at home rather than being used for travel.

I haven't experienced this, but apparently, there's a significant number of peeps who are having issues with wifi in OS X Yosemite across many hardware types.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/28390...-problems.html

Anyone on FT seeing this?

Apparently I was wrong.

According to an email I got for Apple Developers, it said that I should upgrade to the public release. Now with the reported wifi issues, I think I'll stay on PB 6 for now...

Yes, I am. BIG TIME. My MBP is less than 1 month old (came with Mavericks of course), and I am having ongoing issues with wifi disconnecting. Good to know that others are experiencing the same thing. It means a fix will be in the works.

.

Interesting. I had a ton of troubles with wifi on my rMBP with the 1st public beta but after the second one they went away. I too haven't gotten around to upgrading to the release but I thought the last public beta was labeled golden master....

Fdw

Side note: golden master is probably an obsolete turn given that apple doesn't actually press these release into disk anymore (at least I don't think they do...)

Mrtrash757 Oct 27, 2014 9:15 pm

I always have wifi issues at college. on every ty[e of computer.

A bit of an update... my Air is going into the shop for a hardware issue with the screen. Covered by warranty... well i hope I mean I got it in July and have treated it very nice...

I upgraded two Pros (2009/2011) to yosemite and they are doing great, except one small issue with the 2009 (freezing), which was happening before and I am trying to track down slowly.

HDQDD Oct 28, 2014 5:49 am

Found another issue.

So I'm fairly new to OS X (Yosemite PB 1 was my first endeavor on my 2014 MBP). However, I've noticed that the DNS resolver seems to take a break from time to time... I've seen this issue from PB1 all the way through the GM.

I'll be working along, and then go to a website and it'll timeout, unable to do the DNS lookup. Usually within 60 seconds it'll start working again. Judging by the posts I've read in techie forums, this is a widespread issue as well with no solution. Apparently this issue goes back a while and involves Apple moving from mDNSresponder to discoveryd.

The only "solution" I've found is to restart discoveryd and clear the DNS cache. Not really a "solution".

VT_hawkeye Oct 30, 2014 9:03 am

I get warning popups every so often that another device on the network is using the computer's IP -- which isn't true since the computer has a fixed IP set on the AEBS's DHCP settings. Removing the fixed assignment doesn't even seem to solve it. Thankfully it doesn't seem to affect connectivity.

Come on, 10.10.1. Come on, 10.10.1.

stimpy Nov 18, 2014 1:07 am

I'm glad I waited. 10.10.1 is out now and fixes...

Improves Wi-Fi reliability
Improves reliability when connecting to a Microsoft Exchange server
Resolves an issue that may prevent Mail from sending messages through certain email service providers
Addresses an issue prevents connecting to remote computers using Back to My Mac
Resolves an issue where sharing services, Notification Center widgets and Actions may not be available
Addresses an issue that could cause Notification Center settings to not be retained after a restart
Addresses an issue that might prevent the Mac App Store from displaying certain updates
Addresses an issue that could prevent some Mac mini computers from waking from sleep
Resolves an issue that might prevent Time Machine from displaying older backups
Addresses an issue that might prevent entering text in Japanese

^^^ My son finally updated on his 2013 MB Air and luvs it.

I am still sitting on the fence for my old 2008 aluminum MacBook. I did upgrade my 5s to iOS 8.1 and jb with Pangu so if I did upgrade, could activate iCloud Drive ????

Anyone recently upgrade with similar dinosaur? :D

antichef Nov 18, 2014 2:50 pm

This is from my mid-2009 MacBook Pro on 10.10.1 if that helps you decide :D

Mrtrash757 Nov 27, 2014 9:46 am

I have to ask this...

I'm on 10.10.1 but I just got my computer back from it's second repair where they found nothing wrong.

Either my eyes are screwed up, I'm ocd or the issue hast been resolved. I am seeing lines across the screen again, just like I had before.

Has anyone had this happen on their Mac? It is basically a think horizontal line that flashes across the screen when switching windows.... it causes the computer to slow down for a very short period of time.

First repair replaced the logic board, second was a clean wipe and they found nothing hardware. I'm hesitant to go in again because I don't want to seem like a complainer, but they said they would replace it the next time, and I don't want to risk a newish mac dying from some weird hardware failure (which is why I brought it in-> I have had windows machines and some macs do the same thing and presto it was a gpu failure.

So yeah, has anyone else noticed this in Yosemite?

antichef Nov 27, 2014 12:32 pm

Switching windows? Wash your mouth out, thats your problem :D:D

Do you mean switching tabs on a browser, or switching applications?

FWIW, I dont get any lines or slowing down when switching anything.

can I skip mavericks and go to yosemite

I have a 2009 mac pro and skipped the mavericks update. Can I go directly to yosemite? Should I do the update - the folks at the store said it would make the Mac faster. I've not been too keen on the iTunes updates in recent years - always feel lost after a major update and don't want to be a dj. I don't keep a lot of files but do have a lot of photos and music.

Also - somewhat off topic - I've recently had troubles with UA's site (error message and sign outs) so I'm considering deleting "website data" as part of a Safari reset. I've already deleted the bookmark and found it did nothing to help. I don't have problems with any other sites so I thought clearing the data might help. I don't store passwords generally so that wouldn't be an issue. Is there any other reason to fear clearing the website data? Should i do this before a yosemite download?
