Dropbox alternatives

I've been having issues with Dropbox for the last few days and have been unable to get hold of anyone at the company to tell me what is going on. I've been a paid customer for a while and in light of this major incident have decided to move my business elsewhere.

I've done some research and I think I will go with Wuala. They seem to offer a very good level of security at a reasonable price (9.99€). Do you guys have any experience with them or some similar service?

skofarrell Jan 12, 2014 7:08 am

Dropbox was attacked. They are up now.

No experience with wuala. I use dropbox on my mobile devices, no one else seems to have the third party app integration that dropbox has...

That doesn't appear to be the case, from everything I've read on this (including the links you sent) ;)

My Dropbox has been fine and just did a bit of desktop housekeeping this morning, it's sync. with its own partitioned HDD on the "home" server. DDos happened 24/7/365 on the web, still have as much faith in their cyber-security as what I store on SkyDrive & Google Drive, etc.

It really depends on what OP use Dropbox for, given his/her unspecified physical locale, and the alternatives and selecting a Swiss-based provider certainly has its advantage vs. US-based ones, for fairly obvious reasons. Not all of them run on the Linux platform & that's important to me. As a general rule, I do not enable automatic iCloud storage functions on tablets & smartphones.

They had an outage after planned maintenance. This was mainly fixed after a few hours, but apparently there are still some lingering issues.

During the outage, at least one "hacker" group took credit on Twitter for the outage, claiming that they had hacked the site and stolen user credential. They even went as far as publishing a small number of the credentials they had "stolen" - which turned out to be credentials taken from a mailing list for an Irish website several months ago and had nothing at all to do with DropBox.

You can find the latest on the outage at https://tech.dropbox.com/

It depends a lot on what features are important to you.

I chose to "roll my own". I run OpenUpload on a linux (Debian) VM at home. Total Cost: $0. My colleagues and customers also use it to send each other files.

No one to blame for security/privacy but myself. :)

As part of a transition to a new computer, I took a long look at cloud storage. I finally opted for SkyDrive, in part because their prices are better than Dropbox.

I looked at Box a long time, particularly since I have 50GB of free storage with them. For the life of me I couldn't figure out whether I could continually sync a folder and subfolders automatically on a free plan, or if that's only available with paid plans. Their help/support materials are a complete mess. (If anyone knows the answer to that question, I'd love to hear it.)

I also use own cloud that we host ourselves. It's pretty good. But Dropbox integrates with everything.

Some people on Ars Technica have suggested ownCloud, AeroFS and Tonido as alternatives; I have no experience with any of them.

One other option: Sharefile by Citrix http://www.sharefile.com/

Any opinions on Apple's cloud service?

IsleOfMan Jan 13, 2014 1:59 pm

I've been using Box since getting 50gb free for downloading the app on an LG smartphone. My only complaint is the 250mb individual file size limitation for free-personal accounts, but the only time it's ever been an issue was when trying to get a friend back home to upload an MKV movie for me to watch when I was on the road and forgot to bring any with me.

owncloud is pretty good. You have to host it yourself but it's nice. And private.

maskedmesothorium Jan 13, 2014 6:36 pm

I use Google Drive because of its convenient integration with the doc viewer and editor.

oziman Jan 14, 2014 3:17 am

SugarSync is good, if more expensive.
SpiderOak is fantastic if you value encryption.

Now available for iOS and apple devices :)

I use three different services (all free I might add) for three different things! :)

Google Drive - 15GB (Photos)
DropBox - currently up to 5.9GB (Documents)
Box - 50GB (Music)

Grudgingly have to admit that my favourite is DropBox - I use Linux at work and have both a Windows desktop and a MacBook at home, so total cross-compatability is needed, and the lack of native Linux clients for Box and Google Drive is painful (but not unsurmountable).

Dropbox, for the most part when they don't have outages, "just works". A close second is Google Drive, and although Box seems to be making huge strides in their offerings (they used to just offer an "upload" feature without a "sync" app), the total lack of Linux support left me scrabbling around using Samba/CIFS.

Tried them all and this is the best by far

Try "Copy"; 15 GB for free, and you will automatically get 20 if you use this referral link below (disclaimer: I also receive an additional 5GB)
Use on Windows, Android, etc without difficulty; you my install a folder on any or all of your device(s) and in the cloud.
Believe me, they beat Google, Skydrive and Dropbox (and I have accounts with all of the above).
Enjoy!

I have absolutely no affiliation with this company, or any of the others referenced.

Syncplicity

I've been using Syncplicity for a few years. They were acquired by EMC a year or two ago. I found them a little more business like than Dropbox when I first signed up. Inertia has kept me there.

maxim730 Jan 20, 2014 7:57 am

Google Drive.. integrates with Gmail and works pretty well.

sama Jan 26, 2014 9:54 pm

I`m using 2 different providers.
Dropbox for local syncing between the laptops and tableīs.
Amazonīs S3 and Glazier for the photos, which I just need to back-up. Mainly all photos are on external disks, but this is so cheap that I stored everything there in case something happens (dog eats the drive or similar)

Dropbox has been working fine for past 3 years, only once it deleted some files, but with re-store option everything was saved.

The extra free 5gb required me to download the Mac app. And iPhone/iPad apps on iOS also available.

So far looks good as extra storage space....^^

How are you interfacing with Amazon's storage services? Are you using a third-party client program?

I use Goodsync for this - works extremely well. Several hundred Gb of photos in S3, with a policy that converts these to the Glacier storage class after 1 day.

Also has two factor authentication which I like.

Google Drive is very stable.

I use the apple "iCloud" for photos only as it doesn't seem nearly as stable.

SpiderOak ...... all files encrypted on the host ......

I actually use the old fashion way and upload those via the Amazon internet page. I zip all files what I put there in one file and then upload that. I took one program to use, but this is not so difficult either. Of course if you are doing the uploads often, this is not so fast and easy solution.

For me this is 100% back-up, so if I really need those, then I will just download the whole zip file. Files are per year and topic.

I have also the Glazier, I think I put that running automatically after 30 days.

sama Feb 17, 2014 1:06 am

Back to the topic, I downloaded Cloudberry Explorer (free version) and it seems pretty easy to operate, just pull from folder to folder and it uploads on the background.

There is also option which you can use for making the the scheduled backups and you can see the used capacity easier than from Amazonīs statements.

I love, love love Bitttorrent Sync

It's free and you can make your own cloud kind of.

Much better in a way.

And it runs very well on all platforms.

Check it out at http://www.bittorrent.com/sync

Eddy421 Feb 22, 2014 12:34 am

Also still using Googledrive and happy with it..
Very hard to move from any service when ever you start to be used to it...

richard Feb 22, 2014 6:40 am

Using own cloud and bit torrent sync more and more. Still use dropbox because of the number of software packages that use it. But bit torrent sync and ownCloud are fantastic
