How much data do you use?

I currently have a grandfather T-zones unlimited uncapped data plan for $5.99 per month, but may have to move to new plan with 500MB 4G and unlimited 2G.

I rarely blow through the 500MB mark per month, but I am not sure if I'll ever need it later and regret moving plans?

So, how much do you use?

Moderately heavy email use, navigation/google maps when I'm traveling... some browsing and the occasional Youtube video... but no streamed movies like Netflix et al. I've never cracked 200mb a month, but I'm also in Wifi at home and the office.

I have T-mobile also and use between 300 to 500MB a month. But will be skyrocketing if I stream video.

I listen to a lot of podcasts so I use a lot of data, thankfully, I have Sprint so unlimited data.

It's not what we use - we are all different, it's what you use!

Most phones have within the settings the ability to check usage, so I would reset it and see how much you use in a set period.

For instance on my iPhone in Settings/General/Usage/Cellular Usage I can see that since 28Nov2012 (my last reset) I have sent 226MB and received 1.7GB

My iPad cellular usage since Aug 2011 is sent over 700MB and received over 10GB.

Hope that helps.

My Galaxy SIII (VZW 4G LTE) rarely runs more than 400-500 MB/mo, but like others above, it's almost always on wifi (home, office, client offices, public hotspots). But my wifi use is typically 5 - 8 GB/mo. Interesting, when I first got it the SIII was on Ice Cream Sandwich and usage was much higher. Jelly Bean seems to keep usage lower, though I'm not aware of any differences in the way I use it.

I have been known to blow through 5gb on my iPhone, using it as a hotspot, within less than a week.

AKDan Apr 27, 2013 10:00 am

I have 2 smart phones and an ipad on a shared 4 GB data plan. At home and work I am on wifi. The most data-intensive thing I do on cellular data is grabbing some podcasts from time to time. Other than that, doing e-mail and light web surfing I have never broke 2.5 GB per month - it's usually just a little over 1 gig for all three devices combined.

JMN57 Apr 27, 2013 12:01 pm

A lot.

1 clear mifi unlimited - I use it for volume - no idea how much but a guess 5gb/month
1 Nexus 7 3g with ATT 3gn plan - 300mb - 3gb depending on travel and interesting sporting events
1 smartphone - 200mb-1gb

I have a couple of Sling boxes so if there's interesting TV (Masters, March Madness---) I can go through the GB's.

I have 4GB of AT&T for phone (Galaxy Note 2) including tethering (paid by employer) and 2GB for an iPad per month(paid by me)

When I travel domestically and a conference or Hotel does not provide free WiFi or the connection is unreliable/slow, I can burn the whole 6GB a month. If I stay at Hilton, Marriott or somewhere with free and decent WiFi, or not traveling then I could leave a lot of data on the table at the end of the month. Since AT&T has turned on LTE in my neighborhood, and its faster than my DSL, I plan to clean out my remaining data at the end of the billing period.

For International use, I usually get a country specific pre-paid SIM.

2-4GB a month across my iPhone and iPad. Mostly on the iPhone.

While in town, home & office/field locations - I'm on mostly ultra-fast fios and/or mirowave links and used to do about 300 MB of mobile data in the Windows Mobile day, nowadays - about 500 or 600 MB of data (that's low for someone on an unlimited but 3G CDMA plan by VZW) which I do minimal to moderate tethering if necessary. I seldom go over 1GB of data unless I'm on the road traveling by car and staying in places with poor WiFi.

Mrs. L has the same identical HTC global smartphone as me, and since she's not a gadget freak, used an average of 30 MB worth of data each month, mostly for reading emails & MMS, with ultra-light browser usage.

Data use has crept over the 3 years I've had 4G. If I'm with clients I will now regularly run past 2Gb a month and often head towards 3Gb these days. If I've got few/no client visits in a month I rarely go over 0.5Gb.

jason53 May 2, 2013 12:45 am

i have consistently been filling my 6GB a month allotment

dcman May 2, 2013 7:25 pm

I stream music all day at work and when I drive. I also tether my phone to my PS3 when I'm at home. So I can rack up quite a lot of data anywhere from 20 to 30 gigs a month.

I love my T-mobile G1 plan. Unlimited text data and tether for $20 a month.

CPRich May 6, 2013 7:17 pm

500MB last month on my iPhone with Sprint, which is probably typical. But I'm almost always on WiFi (home, work, client, hotel) and also have an AT&T MiFi device.

williemaykit May 10, 2013 7:14 am

Generally I use between 500MB - 1GB a month.

The most I have used is 8.8GB when I moved into my house and was waiting for my broadband connection to be installed. Thankfully my phone provider (Vodafone UK) gave me a 3 month unlimited data test drive for renewing my contract.

You might look at using something like Onovo Extend. It's available (free) on Google Play.
"Onavo Extend lets you get up to five times more out of your data plan without changing the way you use your phone. With Onavo Extend, engage in more app activities, photo sharing, web browsing and more on 3/4G without breaking your data cap. The app lets you compress your mobile data so that you can do more with your Android’s mobile data month after month. And, if you travel abroad, Onavo Extend helps you stay within your roaming plan and saves you money while helping you do more with your data plan."

i used between 4 to 5gb of 4G data as i listen to radios, watch some videos

nmenaker May 10, 2013 2:04 pm

I have unlimited on ATT with an iphone, but only use about 250-400MB a month. usually the phone is on WIFI at home or work, or sbux or something. I have about seven email accounts, stream with a slingbox, download apps while remote, and do a lot of traffic/navigation stuff. I'm not really sure HOW one gets up to 6GB a month of usage.

Stop using wifi and keep doing the stuff your listed and you may well quickly see HOW.

I use a T-mobile hotspot as my primary internet link. I usually exceed 5GiB per month. Thank God for no overage charges.

daniel46211 May 11, 2013 10:40 am

Since I got the iPhone 5, I've been using my 4G connection everywhere (with the exception of downloading TV shows/streaming) mainly because it's faster than my home connection and all public hotspots (50Mbps vs 12Mbps)

So in any given month I would exceed my 20gb limit.

dakuda May 11, 2013 10:46 am

We use about 500 MB/month. Both phones are on wifi at home, and hers is also at work. We have an unlimited plan, but it doesn't appear necessary at this time. Downgrading would save us nothing though.

sdemw May 13, 2013 1:10 pm

For me varies with travel a bit, but average month with 4-5 business trips and being attentive to use wifi whenever possible. My iPhone and iPad (combined data plan) typically use 4gb or so. Typical use with some music/ radio streaming.

tkflyer May 13, 2013 3:15 pm

Ended up changing plan and now on the 500MB 4G and unlimited 2G.

Turned on wifi at home and in office. Most usage seemed to be Google Maps, so changed to TomTom, no data required.

Will see how we get on.

My car now has built-in navigation, but I didn't use it all that much on the phone. Maybe 1 or 2 times per month, on average. I don't expect too much of a change in my usage as a result, but that is a factor that I forgot about.

Damn! That is solid value.
