Issue with sending mail from iPhone

Last night, the issue came up when I tried sending an email from my iPhone:

I tried deleting the account on the phone and setting it up again, but did not work. Anyone know how to resolve this?

And yes the password is correct. I can recieve mail but can't send mail.

You might want to try setting up email access from some other device (like a laptop) and see if that works. Then you'll know if this is a problem with your email account or not.

Well, I can successfully access my email acounts directly on my computer but not on the phone. It happens quite alot on the phone acually and really don't know the way around the problem.

I googled "iphone cannot send mail the username or password is incorrect" See if this works:
.
  • Select "Settings"
  • Select "Mail, Contacts, Calendars"
  • Select [Whatever You named your email account]
  • Scroll down to "Outgoing Mail Server"
  • Select "SMTP"
  • Select [Your primary server]
  • Configure the password
  • Select "Done"

Thanks mate! But you really didn't have to go through the trouble of doing the search for me. Real nice of you.

Thanks again. Cheers :)

Is it an exchange account and are you running version 6.1 (not 6.1.2 ) of the operating system? Many exchange servers are denying access to people until they upgrade. If so, try upgrading to 6.1.2 and see if it works.

Of course if it's not exchange and you are not on 6.1, never mind.

Had a bunch of friends that had the same thing happen to them. In their case, they were using regular gmail. Not knowing what else to do, I told them to update to the latest iOS and then instead of gmail, had them sync through Exchange. Worked great for all of them!!

I'm actually still using iOS 5. I don't want to upgrade to 6 because of the maps and other issues.

This is not an exchange account. I'm just using my personal MSN email.

Have you tried turning the phone off then on? Or a hard reset (hold down the home button & lock button at the same time)?

Yeah.

You might want to back up the phone then reinstall the back up. Or delete the email account then open another (same account).

Have you checked if your cell number is still in the settings? At times my number on the phone drops that information and it asks to be authenticated

The whole maps things is kind of a non issue now since Google released their maps app, which is way better than Apple Maps and old Google Maps. But what ever iOS version floats your boat.

If you're using MSN email, the SMTP server should be smtp.email.msn.com

Some email services sometime require different ways to authenticate. For example, Google requires its EDU and Business customers the full email address as the username.
