replace yahoo.com

i have used yahoo. com adjusted with an ad blocker for years as my first open page(i don't know what you call that page). in the past month or so, yahoo.com has been trashed by a bunch of kids. all pictures and videos. takes forever to load, and has become difficult to find information.

what are the suggested replacements? i have verizon, and verizon.net is unbelievably horrible. the opening page is celebs and what they want for tatoos.

replace yahoo.com

Google is nice and plain. No news or stuff like that on the home page, but should load quickly.

I use Google News so I just see what's going on in a glance... but in terms of the "general-ness" of Yahoo, I don't see an immediate replacement.

Does anyone remember the days when so many sites were just advertising portals crammed with irrelevant content? Like, you'd visit your ISP's web site, and it would be loaded with ads, and there was no apparent way to actually contact them. Google seemed like such a breath of fresh air in those days. I think that's why I appreciate Google so much; no nonsense. Just lots of scary stuff that they're doing with me and my data on the back end...

You can use any page you like on any website you like as your home page. If I understand your meaning, that's what it's called. Just pick any page on any site you like, and enter it and it will be the default page loaded anytime you load up your browser.

Watch out for google though, as boberonicus says. It's like selling your soul... they've got it stitched up so to get many of the most useful services you effectively (and by default) allow them to track you and collect data on you hugely...

If you want nothing, you can use

about:blank

--This might not load instantaneously if you have a virus scan going, but it is fast otherwise. And you don't get anything!

+1 for about:blank

Why do you need a personalized or non-personalized home page? Especially when you just want to open the browser to go somewhere else, the loading of these other pages slows you down. Use a bookmark for that.

Change your start page and home page to "use a blank page", aka about:blank

simplify your life.

I use about:blank as well.

For searches, I have switched to dogpile.com. I find it faster than any of the other search portals and it looks like it is pretty neutral as far as customizing the search results.

I always set my first pages to google. On all my computers it loads very quickly. Also it enables me to test the speed of the connection I have at that moment.

I'm another one for blank start pages, though I used to use CNN for my go-to start page. I guess it really depends on what you're looking for/is most helpful when you start your browser.

DeafFlyer Aug 11, 2012 11:29 am

My default page is the speed dial page in the browser.

xooz Aug 11, 2012 5:22 pm

I use Firefox, and my start page is the page with my most recent links displayed (ala Chrome). Doesn't take long to load and I can click on Yahoo or CNN from there.

Flyertalk is always a nice place to start one's surfing.
