I think that's why I appreciate Google so much; no nonsense. Just lots of scary stuff that they're doing with me and my data on the back end...

Try not to think about that... after all, they say it themselves... "don't be evil"... :D

It really is hard to get away from Google. Between search, mail, news... I really wish there were viable alternatives.

Search Google dominates, no question about that, and the same goes for Apps and Calendar...

But I try to distance myself from going "all-Google" by using Firefox instead of Chrome, and Outlook.com offers a pretty decent alternative to Gmail. Plus, Outlook is still being developed.

The one that I will not be able to get away from is Google News... even with the news function on Bloomberg Terminals nothing beats the search on GN.

Oh, and did I mention YouTube?

I agree with you guys about over reliance on google...but I think that major shift will occur only when Google try to screw people....like apple does with selling overpriced accessories etc....Also outlook looks promising until MSFT goes to being microsoft again...:) BTW what you think of BING or another search engine?

There are alternatives to Google; Microsoft for example. Where Google still wins at the moment is how device agnostic they are. I can have an Android, Windows, OSX or iOS device and all will work perfectly well with Google's major services.

Yes and also the fact that their products are Top Notch and Free...I love them but their reach into our life is matter of caution

And that.

I'm not thrilled with the way G's Chrome works on my Galaxy Nexus (default is to log you in for tracking purposes, but you can log out - among other concerns).

Email, either (no "select/delete all" from the trash folder. But at least there are options.

My "homepage" is actually four tabs: Gmail, bimmerforums, /tg/, and /trv/ -- any new tabs open to blank.

I use myyahoo and/or igoogle with my favorite conglomerations of news, stock quotes, calendar, weather, etc.
