Viber for iphone 4S
A friend overseas just told me to download this app so we can talk for free and it looks good from what I've read online but I have one question as I am not a techie in any way. In order to make sure a call is not billed to my provider, and that I'm only using wifi, do I have to put the phone in airplane mode and turn off the data like I do when traveling? Thanks for any advice.

I use it to talk to friends in Australia. You do actually have to be connected to wifi for it to have a clear connection. I never knew this and couldn't figure out why my calls would drop, til I was told this operates through your wifi.
Shrugs......still don't really understand, but when my phone is on and connected to my wireless at home, the Viber works perfectly and I don't get charged anything from my carrier. |

Thanks, so I guess it's quite a worthwhile app.

One more question if you don't mind-if I take an incoming call and am not connected to wifi, just my provider, I will be charged for it, right?

However, if like LIH Prem mentioned, you have Data Roaming turned OFF, then you will not receive any calls on Viber unless connected to WiFi. |
Ok, got it and thanks again!

Viber
Hi,
This is a member of the Viber R&D Team! We are delighted to see this discussion about our app, and we are here to provide you with direct help :) @Jac747- Viber itself - the app and the service - is totally free, meaning we (Viber) don't charge anything from you. Since Viber uses the internet to function, both sides of the conversation must be connected to either WiFi or 3G. If a user is connected to WiFi - that user is not paying anything for sure. If the user is connected to 3G, the user *may* be paying his cellular company for the data (Viber uses 0.25MB per minute of call), but that depends on the specific data plan that he has with his cellular company, and needs to be verified with them. If anyone has any questions/suggestions for Viber, please feel free to let us know, and we will address them shortly. Thanks, Viber Team. |
So, it sounds like if I receive a call while home and I'm connected to both data and wifi, I should not answer, turn off my data, and call back just to be certain that I won't be charged anything for the call? Thanks.

Using Viber on 3G doesn't necessarily mean you'll be charged by your cellular company. It means that you will use 0.25MB per minute of Viber call. The question of the charges themselves depends on the specific kind of data plan you have with your provider, and needs to be verified with them directly.
However, on a general note, we can tell you for sure that using Viber on WiFi will not incur in any charges for sure, so yes - it is recommended :) |
Viber is good, but What's App is great for texting as well.
