Viber for iphone 4S

A friend overseas just told me to download this app so we can talk for free and it looks good from what I've read online but I have one question as I am not a techie in any way. In order to make sure a call is not billed to my provider, and that I'm only using wifi, do I have to put the phone in airplane mode and turn off the data like I do when traveling? Thanks for any advice.

I use it to talk to friends in Australia. You do actually have to be connected to wifi for it to have a clear connection. I never knew this and couldn't figure out why my calls would drop, til I was told this operates through your wifi.
Shrugs......still don't really understand, but when my phone is on and connected to my wireless at home, the Viber works perfectly and I don't get charged anything from my carrier.

No, you don't have to do that, just turn off data roaming.

Thanks, so I guess it's quite a worthwhile app.

One more question if you don't mind-if I take an incoming call and am not connected to wifi, just my provider, I will be charged for it, right?

The incoming call on Viber will come over Data, not as a Voice call. So, if you received a Viber call and you're not on WiFi then yes you will be charged for the Data usage by your carrier.

However, if like LIH Prem mentioned, you have Data Roaming turned OFF, then you will not receive any calls on Viber unless connected to WiFi.

Ok, got it and thanks again!

Viber

Hi,

This is a member of the Viber R&D Team!

We are delighted to see this discussion about our app, and we are here to provide you with direct help :)

@Jac747- Viber itself - the app and the service - is totally free, meaning we (Viber) don't charge anything from you.

Since Viber uses the internet to function, both sides of the conversation must be connected to either WiFi or 3G. If a user is connected to WiFi - that user is not paying anything for sure. If the user is connected to 3G, the user *may* be paying his cellular company for the data (Viber uses 0.25MB per minute of call), but that depends on the specific data plan that he has with his cellular company, and needs to be verified with them.

If anyone has any questions/suggestions for Viber, please feel free to let us know, and we will address them shortly.
Thanks,
Viber Team.

So, it sounds like if I receive a call while home and I'm connected to both data and wifi, I should not answer, turn off my data, and call back just to be certain that I won't be charged anything for the call? Thanks.

Viber Apr 11, 2012 3:25 am

Using Viber on 3G doesn't necessarily mean you'll be charged by your cellular company. It means that you will use 0.25MB per minute of Viber call. The question of the charges themselves depends on the specific kind of data plan you have with your provider, and needs to be verified with them directly.

However, on a general note, we can tell you for sure that using Viber on WiFi will not incur in any charges for sure, so yes - it is recommended :)

Viber is good, but What's App is great for texting as well.

Set your phone to use wifi over data when both wifi and data are connected. Most phones do this automatically, I believe. My iPhone 4 does.

Viber using 3g to call from the UK to Ireland

Hey I'm using viber on my iphone and its brilliant and love it but i have a few questions about it im going away on holiday to Scotland for 2 weeks and i want to use viber phone calls to call my fiance in ireland and i will only have 3g so if i make a call to him using viber will my phone credit be charged and also what happens if my fiance calls me on viber and we both have 3g will i stil be charged for the phone call

Dubai Stu Dec 30, 2012 2:41 pm

We need to know your carrier. Initially, note that I'm guessing that you are even in Ireland based on your fiancee's location, but this could be an improper assumption. You may be fine using your phone close to normal (with a tad bit of studying). Here is a quick comparison of three Irish providers:

Three

For example, look at Three's rates:

http://apps.three.ie/roaming/pages/d...hree-like-home

Here is data:

http://apps.three.ie/roaming/pages/display/data-roaming

Bottom line, you pay almost the same to use a Three IE SIM in the UK as you do back home. Just make sure your phone remains locked on Three and doesn't wander to someone else.

Meteor

Now let's look at Meteor. It even gets better on voice:

If you're on Meteor, you are better sticking with traditional voice. Note that you need to opt into this plan with the required text.

Vodafone

Now let's look at Vodafone. My quick and dirty study says you are best with Vodafone Passport and sticking to voice:

http://www.vodafone.ie/planscosts/pa...oaming/map/uk/

Both Meteor and Vodafone have ok data roaming packages, but my instinct is just stick with voice.

calls on viber are free, but they use your data, so you will just pay for the 3g data usage, or if you have a wifi connection when you are making/receiving the viber call, it should be free.

Regarding iPhone Apps

I love this app as it can also be used in a flying mode if your phone is connected to a wifi.

Dubai Stu Jan 8, 2013 8:44 am

I like Viber, but it is only good if the other person is on Viber. I have no problem getting my spouse to download an app to chat with me but most people don't. I couldn't get my own brother who simply said he had an unlimited SMS plan to avoid the hassle of this stuff. Two years ago I gifted Whatsapp to my entire extended family virtually no one downloaded it. While I have this stuff, I now just pop for Line2 which gives me unlimited SMS to the US & Canada and $.10 a minute elsewhere together with unlimited calls to the US and Canada. I have ATT's international data plan (unlimited worldwide data plan). I switch to 3g mode only when I live the US, slip on a Mophie case to deal with the added battery suck, and use this approach. Since I cancelled my SMS plan and lowered my minutes, I actually saved money.
