DVD Ripping Software

What software is recommended for ripping DVDs (either US or European format) to a laptop with Windows 7?

DVDshrink is what I use

Braindrain Aug 5, 2010 12:40 pm

DVD Fab. It's free, works for Blu-ray, and updated all the time.

PTravel Aug 5, 2010 12:55 pm

DVDShrink is, unfortunately, old and unsupported. AnyDVD is, far and away, the best ripping product I've seen.

riteshraja Aug 5, 2010 1:21 pm

Any Handbrake users?

but DVDShrink still works perfectly for 99% of all the DVDs out there....
fast and efficient, plus easy to use...

I'd put that figure at closer to 90%.

Quattro Aug 5, 2010 9:29 pm

On Windows - DVD Fab, but I don't think it is free. It works on almost everything and has built in profiles for pretty much any device you many want.

On Mac - Handbreak, no question.

And with all of the Disney DVDs I have to deal with, that figure is closer to 0%.

Yes, it's free from the publisher. They also have a free program to make your DVD drive region-free. So, good for the OP who has DVD's from multiple regions.

Do a google search.

DVD Shrink isn't a good candidate for a ripper as it often gets stuck on the newer DVD's. No idea for Handbrake for Mac but it's the same story for Handbrake for Windows.

Thanks to a heads-up from the FT community, I've a free versoin of Xilsoft DVD Ripper

^ Nice.

I like DVD decrypter.

JOUY31 Aug 23, 2010 6:11 am

I've been using DVD Decrypter for a year or so, and it has worked on most DVDs I wanted to do a backup for.

I have purchased DVD Fab (DVD to DVD option) but currently use only the decrypting part. It has worked with all the DVDs that DVD Decrypter could not rip. So, that is quite an improvement for me.

Nevertheless, there's something I find odd when ripping a full DVD, there is no option to extract to a single file, and the software splits the result into 1GB files, which would not be a problem, IF the order of audio streams (I use at least English, French, director's comments) did not sometimes change from one file to the next. Any thoughts ?

aanswer Aug 23, 2010 9:40 pm

AnyDVD + Handbrake do a fantastic job, especially if you have iOS devices. Works flawlessly on low powered netbooks as well.

@JOUY31 -- which app is splitting the file into 1GB chunks? Decrypter or DVD Fab?

Sorry, I was not clear enough. It is DVD Fab.

I use Video Redo Plus to put the files together. It works for almost all videos (some for some reason don't work). I use it to raise the volume (sometimes the volume isn't high enough) & combine all the files into one. Also, sometimes the language is off. So you can select the stream (usually it's something like x80 for English) and you'll be set.

The 1 GB chunks are VOB files -- this is part of the DVD spec. Any good player software will just see the folder as a DVD and play it as one.

I have also purchased Video Redo Suite ;) and it works very nicely when combining VOB files into an MPG file without any re-encoding ^ if it is not needed , but as mentioned on the web site, it can only manage one audio stream when recombining files, while I usually like to have the English, French and director's comment soundtracks in the output file.

I'll have a look at MPEG Video Wizard to see if it has the same limitations.

Thanks for your help. :)

Thanks, I'll try that too. :)

JOUY31 - if you want an MPEG file, might I suggest Handbrake with AnyDVD? It does MPEG4 and is mobile compatible with the iPod touch / iPhone / iPad. I use it on a low-end netbook with VLC and works very well.

DVD Fab is what I use. Not free but a really nice product that works flawlessly every time.

I've yet to have a DVD that DVD Shrink can't handle and as my laptop is ancient and has only 256Mb of RAM most of the other free progs don't work.

No, DVD Fab is free. At least, there's a free version of it that also rips BD.

Try any modern Disney and any major blockbuster. Guaranteed not to work with Shrink. Also, Shrink keeps the DVD spinning during the entire transcoding process (if that's what's being done) which is a huge strain on the drive.

GodOSpoons Aug 25, 2010 4:05 pm

On the Mac side, I've had good luck with Fairmount for DVDs--it's even done a great job with backing up my hard to backup Disney DVDs--but also with MakeMKV, which is crossplatform and handles BD.

I've had very good success with DVD Cloner VII.

You are absolutely correct. DVDShrink rocks...still.

Anything encrypted that DVDShrink can't handle (RARE) goes through DVDFab7.

Paint Horse Aug 29, 2010 10:47 pm

I tried the free version of DVDFab. All I get is an AppCrash about 15 seconds into the process.

What is the next best one to try?

chee4869 Aug 30, 2010 4:10 am

i'm using Wondershare's DVD Ripper for almost a year now and it works great

I thought DVD Fab has a free 30 day trial of their pay software. Try it.

I used to be of that opinion too. I used DVD Shrink for a long time and it was great. Some Sony DVD's in particular seem to cause it to just not work. I changed to DVD Fab D when I was ripping a lot of DVD's. It just always worked.

In terms of making one VOB file, I just ripped to ISO. I used VLC Player to watch the ISO. It's much easier to store one file and move it around instead of having to deal with a folder structure. I avoided compressing to MPEG as it loses the menu structure on the DVD.

I tried to try it. It will not run. All it does is crash. Thus my question about the next best one to try. What I want to do is copy Blu-ray movies to a hard drive so I can send them from a computer to a TV as I am too lazy to walk over to the TV and insert the disc in the player. Besides I am a nerd. I like to computerize everything.

I downloaded Wondershare's DVD Ripper. It did indeed do what I want for a DVD, but I cannot figure out if it will do the same thing for Blu-ray movies. Does anyone know if it will or will not?

Since you're a self-professed nerd, try re-installing Windows. Or, if you're using XP, I'm assuming you have an ASPI layer installed?

DVD Fab should not crash.

Reinstall Windows  You must do phone support for a living. :)

The problem seems to be version 8 of DVD Fab. The forums over there are full of problem reports. Version 7 seems to work fine, just not version 8. I assume an update will appear at some point.

I do. It will not. I just heard back from their technical support department.

Phone support? Ha-ha. No, I just live by the old axiom to re-install Windows about once a year. Get the cobwebs out...

No idea as I'm still on v6. I haven't needed to rip anything for years...

Paint Horse Sep 2, 2010 6:54 am

Now that I agree with. I am fixin' to do just that as I need to switch to the 64 bit version of Windows 7.

Skiff Sep 3, 2010 1:51 pm

Handbrake, no question.

For those that haven't checked it out in a while, it's now available for Windows and Linux, as well as Mac.

Hate to burst this bubble, but Handbrake for Windows sucks. It's not really a good ripper (in keeping with the latest anti-copying schemes) and it's an average encoder.

No idea if it's just as sucky on the Mac.
