I'll do some hunting about problems with 4.0

Thanks!

What 4.x features do you want?

I have a very basic (and probably dumb) question about jailbreaking my iPod Touch. If I jailbreak it, will I still be able to download and update apps from itunes? (I know jailbreaking voids the warranty, that's not an issue since it's out of warranty anyway.)

yes, everything works just as it normally does, itunes/ appstore, etc.

yes, I expect that security flaw to be patched either in a 3.1.4 or 4.1.1 release

Apparently, it's a pdf exploit.

They say there's a cydia app that lets you accept/reject pdf files on a case-by-case basis. Of course, nothing if you aren't jailbroken.

Adobe should switch their name to "Swiss cheese"; all the browser exploits I've seen are either Flash or PDF (that TIFF hole for iPhone OS 1.0 being the only exception that comes to mind)...just kidding, rather, adobe should be proud to know that they're so ubiquitous that everyone attacks their products, now if they could keep on patching their software...:D

Folders
BT Keyboard support (although I'd prefer a USB one)
The new email client

IMHO with the reported slowness of the 3G on 4.0 plus whatever other hassles you will come up with, plus the sheer brilliance of the iphone 4, the answer is obvious to me. Shell out the cash for a new iphone.

FWIW, I haven't actually had the speed issue on my 3G after I upgraded to iOS4. It apparently helps to do a complete restore to factory settings before upgrading to iOS4.

Just did it, took less than 5 minutes. I'm going to jailbreak my old 3G and then unlock it so I can use it as a travel phone.

Exactly... I'm sure Apple did this on purpose. My 3G was virtually unusable once I'd gone onto iOS4.

So, I just had to buy an iPhone 4.

And I can bet you Apple will bring out a fix that makes the 3G usable again in a few weeks, after they've managed to grab the upgraders (like me).

Cheers,
Rick

No problems here, either.

So when they come out with 4.1, they'd have to crack it again, right?

Interested in GameCenter in 4.1

Then again, going to France next month and it would be nice to use a local SIM while over there, although prepaid data isn't that great a deal in France.

In general, that's how it works. A never ending game of cat and mouse. That's the reason why the dev team doesn't like to release every exploit they've found, and sometimes they skip minor releases so they don't expose an exploit.

But, there's no guarantee Apple will plug this in 4.1. I think they will, since it's high profile now, but you never know with Apple.

Two points, one slightly OT
Apple is planning to release update on a security issue dealing with safari and pdf. Pretty sure that will include attempt to close the latest Team Dev hack. Ironically the jb from Team Dev highlighted this security breach.http://thenextweb.com/apps/2010/08/0...your-idevices/ Don't freak out...read the link for temporary solution :)

OT - pranksters visiting apple stores could actually jb and carrier unlock all the demo iphone4 (anyone having jb/unlocked their iphone knows it takes les than 5 minutes to complete the process) and it took 4 days for apple to figure it out....hiliarious! http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/20...le+Feedfetcher

The only official thing I've seen is that they've acknowledged that there is a bug and they are looking into it or working on it. So, that's why I said there's no guarantee that the fix will be in 4.1. It might be in 4.0.2 or 4.1.1 or 4.2. Who knows? They aren't saying much. This is typical for Apple.

Anyway, the on topic context here was about what happens when Apple plugs this hole. Not if they will plug it or when. Right? Whenever they do plug it, they will need to use a different exploit for the jb/unlock and continue the cat and mouse game.
