If you like the Tumi I suggest you visit a Tumi outlet store. They regularly have available these bags in brown leather.

There are a million bags out there in that shape and size. Nylon, cloth, leather, pleather, etc.

But I believe there is only one that will look as good as a tumi. A tumi bag will easily outlast several (many?) of the less expensive bags and be worth the investment. Seriously, nobody is harder on a laptop bag then I am, and my outlet tumi bag really holds up to the abuse.

I say get the tumi.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3G: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

Possibly not big enough but Knomo looks classy and I'm a big fan

For large lifting I use a Booq Cobra L

I find Tumi a bit too common and boring, stereotypical 'banker on tour'.

but i think functionally a tumi would be better for my travel and abuse?

You can get great bags a lot cheaper by not going leather.

I even prefer not going leather and going with the ballastic nylon type - much easier to maintain than leather.

I tend to use my laptop bags to their fullest extent - I was going through a leather one every 18-24 months before it got too scuffed up, etc. My Tumi ballastic nylon has held up great over the past 20 months to the point where replacing it is not even a thought in my mind.

I have a Briggs & Riley backpack (3yrs), Victorinox laptop-brief (7yrs), Tumi nylon backpack (Mrs. DHG took). All are fantastic bags for different reasons. Neither of them are leather and both were in the $250-300 range. They have held up fantastic after daily use and abuse.

Levenger has some good briefbags (leather and other materials).

Heck, even my LL Bean backpack (made out of nylon) does a fantastic job of holding up and I've had it for 10 years. $60 bag and is the perfect bag (and my bag of choice) for a quick overnight personal trip.

One of the other big reasons I prefer nylon over leather is weight - the nylon is substantially lighter and really makes a difference - especially as someone that has had some major shoulder problems; the more weight I can keep off my shoulder, the better.

Victorinox is always a nice option.. especially if you like the architecture 2.0 collection, or the Tourbach 2.0.. The lifetime warranty on select bags is a good add on to an already great product..
