Bringing it on board is indeed about the only way to minimize the kind of mess-ups indicated in the following:

But if the thing is put in an opaque case and labelled properly, they should get it right at least as often as they do with gate-side checking in of baggage that passengers try to bring on as cabin baggage but which doesn’t fit within the cabin baggage allowance.

Pre-boarding or other early boarding can help.

It's been a while since I had to deal with strollers and car seats for travel (USA domestic and international) as my two kids are now in the mid- to upper-teens. But, WAY back when these little one's were just perfect in every way deserving nothing but the best and oh-my-word-safe-enough-for-Mach 3-travel/crash landings and my spouse and I needed stuff for travel (esp international travel) we went for cheap. Bought a cheap umbrella stroller and just did whatever seemed easiest - check w/ checked luggage or gate check even on one occasion just not even claiming it at the jetway after deplaning. Not to be glib about the cost of things. But, about 15ish years ago, if you poked around our kid-filled neighborhood you could get one for next to zero or cheap via Amazon or similar occasional sales at Walmart or Target. I wouldn't want to worry about any stoller/pram in the $500 range under a plane. On arrival for a time, we had family who could loan us something or we'd buy something on the cheap (or have family get it in advance).

As for car seats and plane usage, we again went for easy, while our car seats definitely made full return trips (even when we were holding our kids in arms for portions of the flight.

Given the varied types of kids, airline and country rules for travel, rules for onboard/overhead storage of whatever, rules for what kinds of seats/straps/harnesses are allowed in various cabins, vagaries of airports and ground crews, I just always thought there were too many variables to buy/risk an expensive (and, in some cases large and or complicated) stroller. I remember seeing a Mom and Dad trying to "reassemble" a two seater jogger stroller in the jetway at JNB with two very overtired kids from a 16ish hour flight from the USA. It was not pretty. We just dealt with it, carried ours and hoped for the best that once we got baggage claim or landside/family that we had something.

I mean, I get it (and got it) - some people are fanatical joggers or are running the race of their lives whilst pushing their two little ones. But, that was really painful and I'm glad spouse and I never tried stuff like that.

As the bus starts to pull away a divine person tapped me on the shoulder - seeing i was carrying a baby - pointed out the window and asked, "Is that yours?" Sure enough, sitting idly in the middle of the tarmac all by its lonesome was our glorious Doona. I screamed at the bus driver to "STOP" - basically pushed past him - may have shoved an old lady out of the way to get to the front door - and charged out onto the tarmac presumably against some flight regulations and snatched the Doona.

At the check-in counter, make sure to have the carrier bag tagged with a baggage tag, like other baggage, and drop it off at the gate. That should ensure delivery to the belt.

We just love our Doona. In her first year our daughter made it to five continents due to that product. As global travellers it is a no brainer.

Suggest hiding an AirTag for when it goes missing.
