Smile Advice for split stay in Phuket

Hello:

I am looking at a possible vacation at the end of this month in Phuket (2 adults, son age 7 and daughter age 2). We are looking to spend 5 days at the club med and 5 at the Jw Marriot. Do you know how far these two properties are apart? Has anyone stayed at the club med? I would appreciate any feedback and any other suggestions of activities to do with our children.

The Club Med is nice but nothing like the JW. They're on opposite sides of the island so you'd need at least 30 minutes to taxi from one to the other. The Marriott property is more about relaxing, the Club Med is more about activity. The Club Med property is surrounded by other hotels, shops and touristic sites, so it will be the lively part of your trip. The JW is more secluded.

As for kids, I can't offer anything specific, but consider hiring a full time nanny to help you out. Check around and you should be able to find plenty of candidates more than happy with $50/day. They might even pick up some Thai!

Thanks for the information. Will we be able to swim in the ocean this time of year (riptide)? Could anyone also recommend a good snorkelling trip to go on. Thanks.

Riptides tend to be very localized, sporadic and generally occur on beaches with a gradual sandy slope. I've not seen a single one in Phuket. The water may be choppy, however, and you may not find that to your liking. You may also find some big waves at some beaches. The more sheltered beach areas (like Patong) are pretty good.

I can't recommend a specific snorkeling trip, but you'd do pretty well going out to Phi Phi. If one side of the island is rough, the other side is usually OK. If you go to Phi Phi, make it worth your while and stay one or two nights. Don't try to make a day trip of it, it's just too rushed and there's plenty to see at Phi Phi.
