I never heard of those t-shirts referred to as wife-beaters. Had to google it.

Apologies, I lost my laundry. And I am actually in my 40's, I just haven't been taking very good care of myself lately.

..as for creepy, yeah fair call - no argument on that.

Aren't ankle length shorts called pants?

They were H&M capris. Still weren't long enough for Grand Palace.

For "Royal" sites (includes various special temples: first, second and third 'class', throughout the country) you really should wear loose fitting full-length pants, loose-fitting short-sleeve shirt/blouse, which modestly cover your legs and upper arms. Tight-fitting clothing will be a problem. Which means you have to queue to rent pants/wraps at entry and exit.

You'll also have to take off your footwear to enter many places. Do not step on the door threshold when entering.

On one trip I wore fabulously styled loose linen long pants to all of those temples/sites that require modesty! I thought I looked so nice. It was only when I got home and wore my pants again and looked at myself in the full length mirror in the sun I realised that my pants were completely see through!

Sorry but full length pants aren't an option for me in the heat and humidity. I will gladly change into the temporary pants they loan out at the tourist sites, and then continue wearing shorts the remainder of the day.

Shorts are not normal attire for adult Thai males in Bangkok or any other big city

At the weekend, I see many affluent-looking Thais in expensive shorts at expensive brunch places. Outside of offices, I pretty much exclusively wear shorts with a collared shirt and smart shoes. As others have said, temples will be the issue, and you may get some pushback at skybars who are trying to limit their intake of backpackers.

Shorts are more common among tourists.

If you wear shorts in Bangkok you will look out of place but since you're a tourist no one will really care. Wear what makes you comfortable.

I agree with zebrametalevel. A Thai friend invited me to a small get-together in Bangkok at the weekend. Out of 8 males, I, a westerner, was the only one wearing trousers (jeans), the others, all Thai, were wearing shorts!

The Thais tend to dress smartly even if they're not wealthy and may tend to look down on scruffy dressers. Long shorts with a smart collared shirt and sandals would be acceptable in most situations except perhaps palaces/temples, a top hotel in the evening, or government offices where a dress code applies or you won't be served.

A singlet, football shorts and flip flops will have people looking down their nose at you.

In Pattaya you would stand out like a sore thumb if you WEREN'T wearing shorts.
