I think the length of the shorts is important to mention. Lots of variation there.

For a cosmopolitan city like Bangkok longer shorts are better, preferably at and/or covering the knees (or longer) like American 'board shorts' or European 'capri pants' types. For more casual beach locations like Pattaya or Phuket most anything goes really.

I remember seeing a young Russian couple in Bangkok once wearing extremely short shorts. His were like something an Olympic gymnast would wear, and hers were to the point of being quite cheeky which garnered quite a few stares  but no complaints.

SL

Yeah, there are scores of 50+ year old American men wearing capri pants, lol.

My hotel lounge here specifies no shorts, but last night there was a woman in extremely short blue jean cutoffs with cheeks hanging down. AFAIK no one kicked her out or even said anything to her about the attire during happy hour.

Also, take a hat, it's hot, damned hot (apologies to Robin Williams) and you need the protection. I've had a couple of people look at me funny but one loud American who sneered at me when we were walking in Lumpini Park soon said my hat was awesone and that he should've brought his own with him.

Why in the world would you want to wear a hat to make your head even hotter?

Yesterday, walking in Siam Paragon, there was a 20 something Australian wearing a black bra, black thong and see through shirt and shorts. Nobody seem to be bothered by that either. ;)

Siam Paragon has its own - very distinctly different - rules for acceptability. Mind, given the frost air conditioning in there, it doesn't sound like she'll survive very long.

To keep from getting sunburned? That's why I wear a hat. I am very sun-sensitive. Carrying my own shade with a broad-brimmed hat never made me feel hotter. If it has some ventilation or is a wicking material I don't think you'd feel significantly hotter.

Depends where you are in Thailand. Shorts are not normal attire for adult Thai males in Bangkok or any other big city.

If you wear shorts in Bangkok you will look out of place but since you're a tourist no one will really care. Wear what makes you comfortable.

I visit a couple of times a year for biz and always wear shorts when not in office. Of course, dinner parties, etc. appropriate attire is required. But tourists pretty much all wear shorts and except in some temples, more than acceptable.

And the younger Thai gen also wear shorts, times are a changing :D

The Thai people I've seen in shorts wear longer shorts, about knee length. Some foreign tourists wear short shorts.

Just got back from a week long holiday in BKK of new years - everyone really wears shorts (but longer ones) during the day and even in the nicest places for lunch it's ok. Dinner is a bit more formal and I always wear pants - but there are tons of places that really don't mind shorts at night either...

I'm 54 and was in Bangkok for three weeks in Nov - Dec and wore golf shorts (just above the knee) the majority of the time and never got a second look. The only times I wore long pants were when we went to Wat Pho and Wat Trimin. Even there I saw foreigners wearing shorts.

OP I think you'll be fine wearing shorts. Lots of Thais wear shorts and sandals, and you can find very nice shorts for sale in the shops at the Siam Center. As others have mentioned, all the big Temples rent lightweight pants while touring the grounds. I chanced it and wore ankle length shorts to the Grand Palace and still got stopped and told to cover up.

Shorts are fine, it's the guy in his 60's wearing a wife-beater on my recent flight that I find creepy.
