SQ is back to flying SIN->SFO direct on the A350 and doing quite well with it
The only way to run the flights profitably is with Y in the back and the A350 direct from BKK->SFO could probobly work out

yes, you are right! the A350 makes this possible. But isn't that a special configured A350?

Both BKK-LAX and BKK-SFO non-stop full-payload is possible on A350/787 with A350 having the range advantage. Remember BKK is 2.5 hours north of SIN.

BKK is just 487 miles less from SFO then SIN

They're using the normal 359 right now. The ULR hasn't been delivered yet. Both UA and SQ are taking substantial weight penalties on the route right now.

so one can assume that with the normal version, this route can not be profitable...

Yes. The only plane that can fly SIN/BKK/SGN reliably beyond SEA/YVR without weight penalties is the ULR. SQ and VN both have them on order. TG does not.
Most of TG comments have mentioned SEA or YVR... and more recently SFO.

My guess is that we'll see TG going into Seattle (and maybe partnering with AS if they are smart.)

VN is almost certainly LAX because of the big Vietnamese American population there.

SQ is SFO and NYC. I don't think they have enough planes on orders to do 3 routes.

That is the flight time from BKK-SIN. On a great circle route from North America, the difference is far less significant.

Whilst premium heavy I thought there was still a small Y cabin on the tg a340-500

Tangentially related.

http://e.vnexpress.net/news/news/vie...s-3572259.html

Also from a different article same source..

"Some 689,000 passengers travelled between Vietnam and the US in 2016, marking an average growth rate of 8.4 per cent per year in the 2010-2016 period. There are no direct routes between the two countries at the moment.

The passengers mainly transit in Taiwan (63 per cent), Incheon - South Korea (12 per cent), Hong Kong (11 per cent), Narita - Japan (3 per cent), Beijing (3 per cent), and Shanghai (3 per cent)."

A couple of takeaways.
  • VN may have a route before TG.
  • Vietnam has slightly better geography than Thailand.
  • VN will have more suitable aircraft 359-ULR than TG
  • This may spur TG to move faster.
  • This is going to hurt BR.
