Trouble reading forum posts

This seems to happen a lot. I am going through the threads in the forums. At some point I click on a link of any type. i.e. read a post, go to next page, go back etc. I end up with either a blank page or part of the page and the browser just sits there. Eventually I will either hit the back for forward button to get out of the 'freeze' (if that is what it is).

Also, when this happens I cannot hit the refresh button to restore the page I was looking at, that takes me back to the forums home page.

Sounds like a network/traffic problem. We haven't seen any increased traffic loads on our server, though. It could be a heavily hit router somewhere between us and you.

When the browser just sits there, does it always stop at the same point in the page?

Yes, usually at a blank screen or with just the banner and tabs at the top.

Dan,

I had a similar problem around 8:15 pm eastern time last night.

I clicked on Myflyertalk and the next page loaded the header tabs... and just stopped....

I tried several time before giving up... figured the FT system was down.

When this happens again, do us a favor and try hitting http://www.webflyer.com. That site resides in the same data center as FlyerTalk, and it may give us a better idea of what's causing these blockages.

If you know how to do a traceroute, running one on FlyerTalk the next time this happens, and posting the results here, would help us out as well.

Traceroute How-To:

(PC) http://www.hostroute.com/supportcentral/traceroute.html

(Mac) http://www.verio.com/support/view_ar...fm?doc_id=3693

This is what I got on the tracert:

1 12 ms 9 ms 9 ms 10.215.156.1
2 9 ms 9 ms 9 ms 24.62.0.161
3 10 ms 9 ms 9 ms 65.96.1.149
4 19 ms 9 ms 9 ms 12.125.33.33

17 69 ms 70 ms 69 ms www.webflyer.com [64.78.185.89]

I had it freeze for a while when it got to this: 63.211.236.198, maybe because it could not get a dns name. When I tried it again the dns entry was unknown.Level3.net. So it is probably the hop from the network service to your ISP.

Consider yourself lucky. This happens to me virtually every time I visit Flyertalk. I've kinda gotten used to it now! (FYI - hitting the back and forth arrows several times will usually take you where you want to go eventually, without dumping you back at the opening home page like refresh does.)

There's a long discussion about this problem in the thread "Huge delays due to tribalfusion" - and some suggestions on how to circumvent it.

Thanks for the traceroute.

FlyerTalk is extremely slow for me this Saturday morning, while webflyer.com loads very quickly. I've tried access from various computers here at work (including a four-way application server) and different browsers. Even tried the "hosts" entry for a.tribalfusion.com... nothing seems to help.

cblaisd Aug 7, 2004 11:51 am

Same thing here. About as slow as I have ever seen it! It's taking between 30 seconds and three minutes to load any page.

jfe Aug 7, 2004 12:04 pm

It is super slow for me right now

:(

cblaisd Aug 7, 2004 1:19 pm

Now it seems to be about 80% of normal

cblaisd Aug 8, 2004 9:08 am

Once again, crawling this morning.

Is there something that happens in the morning??
