Inconsistent tracking of subscribed threads

So I have it set to send immediate email notifications when a new post is made to my subscribed threads.

I also automatically subscribe to threads whenever I post in them.

Then when I get emails, clicking on the link should open the thread to the page and scrolled to the first new post, which would be just after the last post I read in the thread.

But more and more, it's opening on the right page but scrolled all the way to the top, so I have to scroll down and try to figure out where the new posts are.

Why is there this inconsistency between notification links which open at the correct place vs. those which only open at the top of the page?

I don't know but I've seen it happen here or there -- be sure you're logged in. When you get scrolled to the top, just hit "view first unread" and you'll be set.

That View First Unread link doesn't appear on every thread.

For instance, this thread that I'm subscribed to and logged into:

If you don't see it, you have no unread posts in that thread ;)

Well this page didn't scroll down to the latest post nor have the View First Unread link:

https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unit...ervice-11.html

It's just strange that out of the dozens of subscribed threads, there's inconsistent behavior when I click the notifications links for them.

If you already read the thread, and you click a link to that thread, it will take you to the top of page or to the start of thread, and it will not give you a "go to first unread" link because you have no unread threads. This is working as designed.

i just clicked on it because there was a new post.

I had to manually scroll down. No link for unread post.

Definitely not a post I'd read on the page (though I see the body of the new post in the email).

Even if it's working as designed, why do other threads have different behavior?

They don't. I'm sorry, I can't explain this any better. Maybe someone else can take a crack? lol.

That's your answer, that nothing's wrong?

IBobi Mar 4, 2019 7:07 pm

What is it that you think is wrong? That your links behave differently sometimes than at others? That is the way it works. It depends on whether there have been new posts, and whether you've read them, and your cookies, your browser and device. It's complicated, I get it. But you're not describing anything I would consider alarming or broken, you're just pointing out something that seems curious to you, which nobody else is reporting as an issue. It sounds to me like it's working the way it is supposed to. I suggest you live with it for a while, and if you really think something is wrong, make a new report with specifics of the issue, why it is a problem, etc.

Have a great night.

The behavior is different than it was a few months ago.

Definitely different than it was a year ago and different than any other type of forum which supports notifications and links to go directly to the newest post.

I get it, this forum is free so what do you expect as far as consistency or reliablity.
