Problems with scripts stopping on pages? PLS POST SCREEN SHOTS!

The title says it all. In the past few days, FT has been freezing up when trying to scroll down threads, and the error message is always the same. A script on the page has stopped working. Continue. Debug script. Stop script.

Sometimes waiting works, but often nothing does. I'm using Firefox with Windows 10. Everything is fully updated. Occasionally I have had this problem in the past, but not for a long time. Now it's happening every day. Is it just me or are others having this too?

Thanks for any help.

Hi 1P, is this still happening on your end? I couldn't reproduce. Could you post screenshots?

satman40 Jun 6, 2016 4:44 pm

Same problem, clear your Brouser..IOS here..

Didn't manage to post a screen shot, but this happened on this very thread when I started to scroll down it to look at the replies.

The problem is that any action seems to have no effect. You cannot go back. You cannot always close the error message box. The only button that does something is the Debug script button. The system freezes. Sometimes if you wait everything unfreezes, but often the only way to get out is to use Task Manager and shut down the browser.

Here's what's in the error message box:

Warning: unresponsive script

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, open the script in the debugger, or let the script continue

secure-ds.serving-sys.c...urstingScript/SZMKFLVPAIDBR.js:27

[Box] Do not ask me again

[Buttons] Continue Debug script Stop script
The same message (with the same script listed) comes up on other threads in the United forum, but strangely not in the Trip Reports forum.

Edit: I cannot give you the complete script without the thing transforming into a URL link and replacing some of the text with an ellipsis. Simply add Http:// in front of the text quoted above.

It just happened to me (again). Windows 10/Firefox, all current.

When I got the 'script not responding' message, I clicked 'debug'. I have a screen grab of that, if you think it will help you. FWIW, it was pointing to the same line of code as before.

I have never posted a pic in FT before, so if you do want a copy of that first debug page, you'll have to walk me through it. I don't use any photo services, just have it on my laptop.

I just manually updated to an even more recent version of Firefox, and will see if this solves the problem.

I have a copy of my screenshot pasted into a Word document. If you can tell me how to transfer it from there to embed in a post here, that would be very useful. But basically I gave you all the error message info above.

Still happening. Latest error message:

1P Jun 8, 2016 1:51 pm

Two data points:

(1) I have the impression that if you use the scroll wheel on the mouse, you can still navigate most of the time. The error message box stays there but you can scroll the thread behind it.

(2) Got a new error mssage just now, telling me that Shockwave Flash had stopped operating. I clicked on Stop script and carried on.... Is this what's behind it all?

I've just updated it (and avoided installing the ghastly Norton in the process), and will see if that changes anything.

Edit: And I am also noticing consistently that if you click to edit a post it spools for ever until you click the Edit button a second time.

Reported!

Mary2e Jun 13, 2016 3:19 pm

I've received multiple script errors today on Firefox. This results in my post seemlingly repeating itself to the end of the page, but it actually does not. It happens after I submit a post.

1P Jun 14, 2016 1:25 pm

Just another datapoint (and I now have Shockwave Flash updated in case that was it — clearly it wasn't):

This is the first thread I go to in FT each day. Today, it is freezing when scrolling (and then unfreezes) but no error messages are appearing for the first time. Just the freezing. I have noticed the freezing occurring all the time in the United Mileage Plus forum since I reported this problem, but never (so far) in the Trip Reports forum or the Community Buzz forum. Don't know if that's a clue.

Update: United forum almost impossible to use today with much freezing and yes, the script error messages have started again.

big_mac Jun 14, 2016 2:41 pm

Using a Windows 10 phone viewing the forums, it completely freezes after 1-3 minutes; with or without scrolling or visible ads.

Then, after no activity for about 75 seconds, the page reloads.

IBobi Jun 14, 2016 3:55 pm

Please post screen shots of the frozen page so we can tell if it is an ad problem thank you.

WIRunner Jun 14, 2016 11:43 pm

I'm simply having posting. The screen will show "posting" and kinda stays there. If I scroll, it just turns white. Using Safari 9.1.1 on a Mac Mini with OSX 10.11.5. I'd post a screen shot, but it would quite literally be a white screen with "FlyerTalk" on the active tab. I have to force quit Safari to do anything else.

IBobi Jun 15, 2016 1:40 pm

If you are having issues with page loads, please post a SCREEN SHOT so we can see the ads on the page, thank you.

Mary2e Jun 15, 2016 1:55 pm

I just posted again and received a script error.

Are ads causing this issue? I'm ad-free because I'm an ambassador, so I don't think it's on my end.

Ah, that might be it. Here is the error message from a page that has ads from Sheraton, EE, TalkTalk, Roku and others. Plus an ad (video or flash play) that won't load and resolutely remain as a black square.

Add the following to http: for the unresponsive script:

I have a problem with the sexual ChnLove.com advertising. And I have cleared all my cookies etc. Just because I log on from Asia doesn't mean I should have to put up with this type of adverts. I have also reported this to google but to no avail.

Thank you for the screen shot! We're investigating this.

Good, as it is still appearing. As a side note, when you click the (x) on the ad in question it asks you the reason why you want to NOT see this ad. Interesting is that once you click the (x) it deposits cookies of this web site in the cache.

After several peaceful weeks with few or no problems, this is now back with a vengeance. The last couple of days have had freezes on multiple (but not all) pages.

I'm quite sure it's due to adverts not loading properly. Very occasionally the page will stall opposite the big black rectangle where the ad will appear (if the script works) or not (if it doesn't).

Can nothing be done to fix this?

scillyisles Jul 30, 2016 1:56 am

Exactly the same problem here with multiple errors loading scripts. Makes the site unuseable. Just typing in this post took some time as the number of script errors displayed slows everything down to a crawl.

Still happening? Have you tried clearing cache?
